Ellen DeGeneres Talks Proposition 8 Passing

Here’s what the outspoken TV host had to say about same sex marriage still being banned in California:

Watching the returns on election night was an amazing experience. Barack Obama is our new president. Change is here. I, like millions of Americans, felt like we had taken a giant step towards equality. We were watching history.

This morning, when it was clear that Proposition 8 had passed in California, I can’t explain the feeling I had. I was saddened beyond belief. Here we just had a giant step toward equality and then on the very next day, we took a giant step away.

I believe one day a “ban on gay marriage” will sound totally ridiculous. In the meantime, I will continue to speak out for equality for all of us.

What do you all think about this issue?

I totally agree with her!!!
Y is it that the hetrosexual majority have the right the dictate whether other people (Gay and Lesbians) should be able to marry, how does this issue really concern them??

Y, it doesn’t concern them. I asked someone “how does it hurt YOU?” It doesn’t. Will it raise your taxes? No. Will gay married come to invade your house and make you gay? No. It will have no effect on your life whatsoever. There are many bigots and hypocrites that allowed this law to pass. Bigotry and discrimination is hateful.

I stand for love and equality for ALL. I hope this measure is overturned by the supreme court. Live and let live.

From a straight married woman.

Shame America for discriminating against yet another group. Now, I don’t support gay marriage as I don’t support straight marriage. Why? Because marriage is an RELIGIOUS issue, therefore it should be only recognized in the CHURCH. States have no business recognizing such unions.

I think that everyone who seeks to join into a committed relationship and share household with another person should only be recognized by the State via civil union. So no matter if you are a man and women, or man and man, you all have to go and apply for the same license. If you then choose to be wed, then take your butt to the Church and let THEM issue you a marriage license, and move on with our life. Until then, if straight couples are recognized by the state by marriage then so should the gay. FAIR IS FAIR.

ladee i hear what your sayin, but not liking gays isnt bigotry its homophobia. I hate when fags try to compare thier struggle with that of the black race. People dont like homos cause of the lifestyle not skin color, so you know black fags got it even worse, good. ^^^James is right. Bottom line, in nature two animals of the same (species) gender cant reproduce (the point of creation), so what does that say.

Sire, I was actually speaking of people that use the bible as an excuse to justify discrimination. I should have clarified that. I know the difference. Homophobes, what are you afraid of? Why does it matter to YOU? They arent beating down your door to “turn you gay too” Live your life and let others live theirs. And you calling them “fags” is just wrong. I dont know your race, but say some one referred to you as a nigger, a honky, a spic or a chink. You’d be hollering racism. Treat people with the same respect you want to be treated with. Whether you like it or not, gay people are not going to stop being gay, loving each other or building families just because YOU don’t like it. Again, live and let live.

I represent love, respect and equality for all.

It is absolutely amazing how ignorant people still are. What does being able to reproduce have to do with anything. Do u know how many people are reproducing and then cant even take care of their babies?? Gays and lesbians can take care of unwanted children that the heterosexual people are producing. So being able to reproduce has nothing to do with it. There are many straight people that shouldnt even have the right to be able to reproduce because they are so careless. Why the hell do you care if the people standing next to you are gay? Are they contaminating your air? What the hell is the problem? Why do you care about someone else’s lifestyle? Its not effecting your own and if it is then you have a problem. Thats like hating someone because they like wearing orange. It has no effect on you whatsoever. To the person talking about Adam and Eve were made to wed…They also walked around with leaves covering their privates, does that mean we should too? The human race is constantly changing and evolving. Love is love. You cant tell your heart who to love, and you cant control who someone else loves. Live your own life and dont try to control anyone elses or you will be wasting your life worrying about the next person. Everyone has their own opinions but we shouldnt pass a law thats based on a couple of ignorant peoples opinions. Thats all Im saying.

For ‘James’ and ’sire for hire’

Are u living in the darkages or what?? The human race has come a looooooong way from relying on ‘evolutionary’ factors to dominate ones life. If this ‘nature’ you both speak of was so strong then women would still be at home only concerned with child rearing and taking care of the home, are you aware of the amount of children that are in care homes or adpoted?? the amount of abortions performed every year??? And as for hetrosexual men, for too many are absent from taking care of their responsibilities by provinding for their offspring!!!!

The point is, human beings have come a long way from relying simply on the nature of their species to determine all apsects of their lives, so your nature argument is irrelevant. Also you might want to do a little historical investigation of your own, homosexuality has been prevelant in our “species” for thousands of years. Not to mention that homosexual behaviour can be found in at least 500 other species of the animal kingdom!!!!!

I can’t believe they banned gay marriages in the same year America was tolerant enough to elect a Black President. This country will always be sick and twisted in one way or the other but they should continue to struggle. Everyone has their struggles – it’s not right to say that anyone else’s struggles are easier or harder than the rest. Continuing to make judgements against others (even if you’re black) makes you a racist all the same – SIRE!

Gay supporters got behind Barack and the Democratic party and staunchly supported him and DEFINTIELY helped him get elected. Now those same gay supporters feel betrayed. What’s even more insult to injury is the number of black and latino voters in California who supported Prop 8. Gay voteers are good enough to help us elect Barack, but not good enough to live a discrimation free life.

You cant the change the fact that you are born gay anymore than youcan change the fact that you are born black. Lawd Jesus if you be unfortunate enough to be born both black AND gay.

@James, homosexualtiy has been going on since the beginning of time. It is not new, it is not going anywhere, and no matter what you think about it, the # of divorces in this country directly counters the “christian” sanctitiy of marriage. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. No matter how hard you try.

Perhaps the “restore marriage “cause would have more effect if it incorporated the banning of divorce. But those a-holes would never do it b/c they know that their “cause” is flawed at it’s root. You can’t be pro holy matrimony and pro divorce.

I’m sorry but I’m happy it was banned…I love all people because I’m a christian woman but I don’t agree with gay people getting married.

I do agree with their needing to be stricter laws on divorce…maybe less people would abuse it and there would be less divorce.

Someone mentioned above that marriage is only about the church, well so is not being gay…so with that logic they shouldn’t be allowed to get married anyway.

I think they should have the same rights as hetero couples…finances, etc but real marriage NO!

^Just because you don ‘t agree with it, doesn’t mean it shouldn’t happen. I don’t agree with alot of shit. Alot of white ppl don’t agree with the president-elect.

But gay marriages aren’t your concern… it’s Gods. Banning them to marriage is another act of “playing God”. I think it should be their choice.
