Here are a few excerpts from the new DETAILS magazine interview where Quincy Jones (producer of Thriller) talks candidly about Michael Jackson.

Q: But it must’ve been so disturbing to see Michael’s face turn into what it turned into.
A: It’s ridiculous, man! Chemical peels and all of it. And I don’t understand it. But he obviously didn’t want to be black.

Q: Is that what it was?
A: Well, what do you think? You see his kids?

Q: Did you ever discuss it? Did you ever ask, “Michael, don’t you want to be a black man?”
A: No, no, no, please. That’s not the way you do it.

Q: But he was beautiful before?
A: Man, he was the most gorgeous guy.

Q: But he seemed to have some deep-seated issue with how he looked?
A: Well, that comes about a certain way. I’m not sure how it happens. I’m just a musician and a record producer. I’m not a psychiatrist. I don’t understand all that stuff. We all got problems. But there’s a great book out called Too Soon Old, Too Late Smart. Did you see that? That book says the statute of limitations has expired on all childhood traumas. Get your stuff together and get on with your life, man. Stop whinin’ about what’s wrong, because everybody’s had a rough time, in one way or another.

I dont think he did not want to be black, I think he didnt want to look like his father.

@Trish- Dont be a ignorant fake black woman that is upset she can not find a real black man(1st of you are listening to wayne, that tells me SOOOO much.)

I agree with Trish…it’s funny how BM (such as QJ) can talk about how Michael didn’t want to be black, but some of them ONLY date WW and have the NERVE to make comments like QJ does…the same could be said about him. He seems not to want to accept his own as well.

I agree with Trish to its just the whole “white woman loving ass” things seems a little idk….bitter?

sorry, yall got it all wrong….
black men love ALL women! :)
its just yall generalize other races as “white” :)
they can be rican “she white” like kim kardash “she white”
sorry, its just variety is the spice of life :)

How can he state that Michael Jackson obviously didn’t want to be black yet recognize that he ISN’T a psychiatrist?

How he even has the nerve to say all this shit now instead of even 10 years ago is beyond me. I don’t think this is something he should have spoken on in such an insensitive manner especially AFTER the man’s death. That’s why I don’t feel bad for his ass when I hear VIBE folded!!

Did anyone read the entire article (you should)? Look Q is a little weird and he can’t help it, his talent has given him a life that millions of us will never now.
He loved Michael and I dont believe what he said in this interview was said to be mean, he was just being very honest, his honesty does not have to be everyones truth. And as much as I dont like to see a brother with a WW I know that does not mean he wants to be white (not all of them anyway). So it was a valid statement he made coming from his heart PLUS Q knew Michael on an intimate level and none of us did.

I know he loved him Michelle but its just in my opinion when someone considers you a friend there are certain things that you just keep to yourself whether you believe it or whether they tell you in confidence. The media keeps rehashing the child molestation trial and I think that’s enough as is without a close friend saying something like this.

I’ve been thinking the same thing….but damn QJ they haven’t even layed the man to rest yet.
I love MJ and was always a fan even when his shit was looking real suspect, but MJ did NOT want to be black. All 3 of his kids are white as snow when they could’ve been at least biracial. I guess him and Madonna had a pack…..I’ll raise white kids and you can raise Black kids….but not American Black kids….oh hell no, you got to go to the mother land to get your Black kids! Ha!

18 condescension is a front for jealousy 07/02/2009 at 11:06 AM

when i saw qj’s first reaction interview with charlie rose on friday, the day after mj’s death, he shows caring, compassion and most importantly appreciation for michael.

a few days later, on the details interview, (the magazine that advises it’s readers “When in doubt, order what the patrons who get their mail delivered to the bar are drinking” ), i felt sick!

dear quincy jones…i hope some day u will realize that even tho u tried to come off as honest and nostalgic in this interview it was no match for your smugness and stupidity.

all those nobel doctors ur seeing haven’t taught u very much about condescension.

next time u confirm ur own value by being taught by people others can’t even pay to see, why don’t u have a little chit chat about the man in the mirror!

That was a good interview. Everyone knows that stuff he said is true. Whether he kept it to himself or not it’s the truth. And no matter what Quincy Jones are anyone else says about MJ that doesn’t discredit his greatness. And he hit the head on the nose about the childhood part.

it’s not about wanting to be black or white. it’s about the SKIN DISEASE that MJ had. QJ just lose whole lot of respect i had for him. disgusting.

Quincy Jones has a lot of nerve. His kids don’t look much blacker than Michael’s.

at first i was like realloy damn qj but tell me this who was around dude when he made the biggest albums of his career and was around him when he turned from black to per say white qj. like he said he has been around people with addictions for his whole life. like he said made excuses and if he is as rich as he is and been around the world and didnt believe that skin disease shit why does that mean he throwing his namee in the mud its not like he saying he molested the alleged kids he saying what everyone knows he had a problem of being black maybe it was his intent on sellling more records who knows but mj looked like a pale figure of what he used to be when he died god rest his so but dont hate on qj for telling the truth maybe if more people spoke up instead of worship mj like a god then he might have gotten some help for his mental problems come on dude was 50 and still thought he was peter pan and was gone off of some strong meds. the people around him should be ashamed of themselves. but that is how it is when u are biggere than life

agree with “bluegrass boi”…whats the point of QJ holding anything back when the man is already dead and gone. it’s obvious MJ had a problem or was just extremely stubborn, but who do you know that great that doesnt have any problems.

I think it’s weird how upset everyone has gotten about QJ’s interview, it just seems so real and honest to me. And gives a little insight into MJ’s life

I think this is ironic when every woman you were married to was white and all your kids are bi-racial.

Reply

yeah they are but he didnt say he never claimed that they were all his kids from his dna and they not look anything like him and they are bi-racial not blue eyed and blond i quit its my last post on this yaw its just that qj is being looked at as a hypocrit when he only is giving his opinion on whether or not mike wanted to be white

i agree with TRISH and BLUEGRASS… although QJ was honest (in my opinion) he REALLY shouldnt have said it, especially so soon after his death, let him lay to rest a while before we rehash the negatives. I personally believe he wanted to be white, however he started his career very young, and at a time when blacks were seen and treated in certain ways. I mean think about it, he was the first black man to be played on MTV, thats big. He opened alot of doors, an awesome performer. But sometimes critisizm gets to people , and it probably left him mentally scarred.

Quincy was asked a question. It wasn’t as if he just blurted it randomly. Why can’t he be honest ? Just because someone passes doesn’t mean that they can’t be spoken about. If you can talk about ‘em while they’re alive… you can talk about ‘em after they’re dead. Death doesn’t remove truth and perception.

Yo, if there is anyone qualified to say something about MJ its Q. With out Q MJ would not be anywhere near the star he was. This man produced by himself MJs three biggest albums. He aint like these one or two beat making producers they got out today, he made whole albums for MJ. Worked in the studio with him up close an personal. Helped build him into the global superstar he was. He made the Thriller, Off The Wall and bad albums. All the beats you loved was not MJ it was Q.

Secondly, of course MJ didn’t want to be black, lets knock off the crap about the skin disorder. No one else in his family got that disorder (no brother, no sister, no parents or grad parents). The only disorder Michael had was a plastic surgery disorder. The man wanted to straiten his nose so bad, them damn nose fell off. He was the only living human I can think of that you could see strait inside his head. He wanted his chin to look like Bert Reynolds, you know he aint have no dimple in his chin when he was younger, then all of a sudden he come out looking like the dude on that cartoon American Dad. And since so many of you talking about the Q loving white women. Look it Michael, look at all the women he went public with, look at their color. Lisa Marie Presley (white), Brooke Shields (white), Debbie Row (white). The kinds don’t have a trace of black in them. What you going tell me they got the disease also, give me a brake. Halley Berrys kid is three fourths white, had he still got blackness in him, yet Michael three kinds don’t have none. Its sad when you got Modonna trying to get black kids and Michael trying to get white ones. People face facts, Michael hated being black.

DC,

“Look it Michael, look at all the women he went public with, look at their color. Lisa Marie Presley (white), Brooke Shields (white), Debbie Row (white). The kinds don’t have a trace of black in them. What you going tell me they got the disease also, give me a brake.”

You are an idiot. Quincy Jones is a hypocrite. He has done every white women from here to Idaho. All of his wives were white and so were his girlfriends and babymamas. You probably are unfamiliar with him. Tupac Shakur called him out in his own magazine “Vibe” a long time ago and he got uptight. His very white looking daughter Rashida wrote a piece defending her father and his blackness for him only to turn around and launch the same attack against someone else. Many black men from that generation in the industry behaved in this manner.

Quincy, the man just died. Have respect. While your at it please tell me who made the gatekeeper of blackness. You do not have the requirements…lol…your blackness has been questioned by others in the past.

Once again, DC is an idiot.

Oh please. I also have the disease and no other living family members have it. Idiot.

Michael Jackson reportedly has black girlfriends who all talked. Check Romonica Harris, Shana Mangatal and Stephanie Mills.
