“If You’re A Singer Not An Actress, You Should Sing…” Nia Long

“I didn’t see ‘Obsessed,’ so I can’t comment, but it’s just not about how talented you are anymore. It’s about, ‘How much box-office revenue will this person generate?’ When you see certain people – we won’t name names – they just don’t have the skill, and no one in their team has said, ‘You need acting classes.”

YOUCH!  Is Nia jealous or just telling the truth???

Love it!! She is on point. Beyonce is not an actress but no one can take anything away from her in the singing arena. Finally someone has the balls to say it. I saw her in Cadillac Records and it was O-K nothing to write home about. It’s just unfortunate that people are not able to voice an unfavorable opinion about someone without being classified as a hater.

I guess she’s telling the truth from her perspective. Being that acting is a highly competetive profession with a limited amount of work for black professional actors, it has to be frustrating when successful artists from other genres of entertainment hog the entire spotlight and are now competing with you for your work. Unfortunately, there isn’t much that she can do to stop it. Star power equals money.

@summer08 ur an idiot..go get sum brain cellz then come back wit a slightly intelligent post lolol

Nia ain’t hatin on her she’s just bein real. I like Beyonce and I love pop culture, I also saw Obsessed and thought it was a good movie. That being said, I can understand how some1 who went 2 ‘acting school’ and has made a career out of ‘acting’ would be upset @ the fact that a pop artist is often chosen 4 roles more often than ‘real actors’ because their ‘buzz’ will generate more box office sales. In Nia’s case though I think shez an amazing actress and I’ve loved her since ‘Love Jones’ and if I had 2 choose between seeing a movie wit Bey or Nia u can bet ya $2 ass I’m ridin wit Nia–alll day longgg ; )

It is unfair that non-acting mega rich singers are being given roles that they don’t deserve just because they can attract a crowd. While qualified unemployed actors are being overlooked.

I love me some Beyonce live but that woman cannot act. I don’t think she had to make that point in the magazine (or maybe she did) but it definitely wasn’t hate. I haven’t seen a quality movie starring Beyonce yet.

Who ever thinks Beyonce can act must think the BET Blackbuster films are award winning.

If LifeFiles posted some more of the interview and not just the controversial part, y’all would see when Nia says there are more roles for black actresses but the quality has gone down. So its either take a bad role while Beyonce and whoever else gets a good one, or you don’t eat.

She’s not hating but if Tyler Perry hasn’t created the role, then there aren’t too many chances you’ll get a quality role as a black actress. When one is available its hard to compete with Bey’s obvious star power.

They asked her about “Obsessed”. The interviewer had Beyonce’s non-acting ass on his/her mind. Wanted Nia’s take on it. Nia is far from hating. She’s and the interviewer were subliminally staing the obvious.

I agree 1000% with Nia. But black cinema in general is garbage! It’s a dam shame that Tyler Perry’s half-baked productions have become the major supplier of work for black actors. Its been over 40 years since the civil rights movement took place and gave us a bit of an advantage. But now in 2009 it seems like we’re more immature, careless and accepting of societies stereo typical roles than we ever were. We’ve lost it!

as much as i like Beyonce, i think Nia has a point here. It’s all about the box office these days. it’s a pity, but that’s the world we live in. i don’t think she is hating, she is just saying what it is.

whoever mentioned Jennifer Hudson needs to be smacked across the face. I think she can sing her ass off, and she was made for her role in Dreamgirls, but she has played that same role in every movie since.

That southern sassy black girl role is played. Until she does something else, we will not mention her in the category of musicians turned actors/actresses.

Ice Cube, Common, and Mos Def have had a wider range of roles than J-hud

say what 07/15/2009 at 8:35 PM

i agree with her. there are some singers/actors that are an exception but beyonce isn’t one of them. it’s a shame you waste ur $12 for a movie with a good plot and a terrible actor. Beyonce actually did better in obsessed but some parts she still wasn’t believable. it’s a shame that ppl like Nia suffer but it’s all about the money. How much revenue the movie will generate and you can believe all day everyday beyonce will bring in that cash!!

At the end of the day, Bey CANNOT ACT

I saw OBSESSED, and I was appalled by her acting.

I wish they would have selected Sanaa or Nia…

Fact is, it’s just NOT in B’s personality to portray anyone but herself (and Sasha Fierce)

Again, not hatin’, just statin’.

And when she blurted that foolish line “YOU TOUCHED MY CHIII-LD?!”

*MAKE BELIEVE FAIL*

I agree with Nia Long. I love Beyonce she can sing her but off. But she has no real acting talent. If critics and fans alike just sit back and watch her movies as a “fan of movies and the art of acting” and not as a Beyonce “Oh my God, that is my favorite singer fan” they would realize Beyonce is lacking in the talent side of acting. Don’t get me wrong she is not the worse I’ve seen…M.C in Glitter (need I say more?) But she is not as great as a actress as Ms. Nia Long

nia’s telling the truth, beyonce want to be an icon, call it driven or money hungry at least when you try your hand in new projects be somewhat skilled. beyonce cannot act, its her name that got her the role not her talent

Flip star you got me crackin up. LOOK YALL…..Beyonce cannot act and we all know that….BUT GUESS WHAT? she is not the only one. She’s doing her thang and i would too even if i couldnt act. Its a cut throat business, what was she suppose to turn down the roll so that Nia could do it???Give me a fuckn break…..Nia is speaking the truth but she is also hating….She hasnt been in anything worthwhile in YEARS…and that aint Beyonce’s fault.

Nia isn’t blaming Beyonce for her not being able to score a good role. She’s just frustrated that she has to deal with more competition from people who aren’t real actors. It’s like when an American company fires all of its American workers and out-sources their positions to India and other foreign countries. Nia is not hating, she’s being brutally honest about how she feels. I’m positive other actors feel the same way but just don’t have the balls to publically admit it.
