This was a situation that occurs everyday but without the Harvard degrees. Im glad Mr. Pres said what he did cause this shit has got to stop. They should not let this just fade into darkness but rather bring this racial shit 2 light with these police officers. This man was arrested because he challanged the police & we all know blacks do not have that right.
I agree with your comments! The sad thing is if you go on AOL and read the story, the amount of racist statements being made is ridiculos! We all know racism still exist in America, and just because our President is black doesn’t change that! Yes, we (African Americans) have overcame so many obstacles in the past 50 years, but its only been 50 years. You can not erase 250 years of slavery and racism in America not matter how some European Americans want to. The fact that this still exist speaks volumes even today, and Police Racial Profiling is still another inadvert way of saying this type of racism exist! I don’t care what minority group your in, it is still wrong and unjust, and needs to be addressed!

She(my daughter) is darker than the rest of us…….anywhoo…..the police stop my dad and my child and proceeded to ask him who’s child he had! Then they took my child to the back of the cop car and asked her if she knew the man she was with.

1914inches, you have a valid point! Unfortunately after reading various articles about this case and researching this topic extensively, racial profiling in this matter is clearly indicated here! The police are trained to racially profile minorities and that’s a fact. If the professor clearly show his I.D. that indicated that he was the resident, and was asked for his badge number and name and got offended that he was being challanged, he then decided that he could personally take matters into his own hands! That’s not justice, that is blanted retalition! You have to look at the history of Police treatments towards minorities especially African Americans to understand the history and why we feel that the actions by the officer was unjust.
Yes he tried to save the black basketball player, great! But that’s just like someone of European descent saying I not racist, I have plenty of black friends! I live in Cambridge, MA close to the Harvard Square area where this incident happed and believe you me, I was not at all surprised this happed to this man. Cambridge is a very diverse city, but it’s very segregated as well. There is racism in the police department itself, so maybe this will be a wake up call to all the internal brothers. The officer in question stated that his whole department supports him, if this is so, then I feel sorry for the rest of us common black folk in Cambridge.
All you doubters have to do is watch the police shows where they pull over the angry white person. Watch how much crap the officer takes from this white person, and still not arrest them(there are several examples).
ANY black person watching that knows full well that they would not be sleeping in their bed that night if they came close to saying the same thing.

I disagree with you about us giving them the ammo. In my previous post you can see that most black folk have learned to NOT give cops any ammo – especially if you are not a Harvard professor – because for normal black folk this is a life or death issue.

I believe the word “racist” and “racism” isn’t properly understood by definition. According to the dictionary, Racism is “an excessive and arrational belief in or advocacy of the superiority of a given group, people, or nation, on racial grounds alone; race hatred (Funk & Wagnalls New International Dictionary of the English Language).”
Taking the secondary definition of “race Hatred” and looking up the word “race” it is “One of the major subdividions of mankind, regarded as having a common origin and exhibiting a relatively constant set of physical traints. On the basis of the more commonly used criteria such as stature, the cephalic index, the nasal index, prognathism, skull capacity, texture of the hair, degree of pilosity, color of the skin, and hair and eye color, mankind has been divided into primary stocks or races, each of which is regarded as including a varying number of ethnic groups.”
It continually amazes me that the word in society is always used when it is a white to black or brown situation; never the reverse. Ironically, according to the definitions, all lot of what I am reading in this blog is all about black or brown hating white. I was born, raised, graduated high school, and am now living in Detroit, Michigan. I reside in a home my Uncle purchased down the street from his childhood home in the 1960′s. I experience racial discrimination, profiling, and bigotry in my hometown for over 20 years…because I am white living in a predominantly black city that even the blacks are wanting to move out of. My white friend, who ws staying with me, got stopped for speeding by a black officer and was asked “What are your doing in my neighborhood, Boy?” He was polite and said “Excuse me, Sir?” The officer also profiled him because he was on a motorcycle and had tattoos. Three strikes against him. The black judge raised an issue of “What were you doing in Detroit with a Dearborn address?” My friend politely replied “I didn’t know it was against the law to travel between cities.” She dismissed the case when the officer admitted to saying such a thing. I have used the “color” terms rather than “ethnic” because I know black people who are not just from Africa. They are Hatian, British, Jamaican, and Puerto Rican. It can get so complicated when we add all the addendums to being an American.
Racism is a tool of the devil to divide mankind, fuel his hate, and perpetuate his lies. God was the creator of diversity because He must have loved variety in His work. Just look at nature all around and you will see He has done this with the trees, flowers, land design, birds, insects, and animals, too. The only thing that will cover the sins of the past, the hate of the present, and the bigotry of the future is love. Proverbs 10:12 says that “love covers a multitude of sins.” Whether you believe in Christ as the Messiah or as a Prophet, His final instruction was to “love one another as I have loved you.” He showed us how to live an agape love, one that does not consider the cost of giving such a love or the merit of the receiver. The world will be a better place if we start doing this one by one.

Aleis needs to read her history. According to the display at the Charles Wright African American Museum, someof the slave trade was the result of black tribal chiefs that sold Africans from other tribes out of their own pool of captive slaves for the goods they bartered for. The display is a phenomenal truth to the awful conditions throughout the ordeal. I may be white, but my ancestors also came over crammed n the hull of ships because we weren’t affluent. My Grandmother cleaned other people’s toilets to provide for my mom and her siblings.
It’s time to lay down the weapons, reach out to one another, and build bridges over the gaps. Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream was that ALL men would be treated equal. He was a visionary of a future I hope I get to see in my lifetime. If this blog is any representation of that, we have a long way to go on every side.

I never said that we are living in a “post racial” America, and racism and race profiling are non existent. However, all i am saying is that everything is not about race, and there are two sides to every story. But because we are African American we are trained to only so the Black side regardless of the facts. I read the police report..and if anything BOTH sides were in the wrong. Wrong because the officer should have left the house after being shown proper ID, and wrong because Mr. Gates had no business threating, and causing a public disruption. If you cant see the logic in that then you just have your blinders on. Give those white people who ARE NOT RACIST some credit please. Stop kicking dirt in their faces for having the courage to stop the evil cycle of racism handed down from their parents. I think Gates is showboating, he made elitist comments and he luckily (or unluckily depending on your perspective) just happened to accuse a police officer of racial profiling who happened to be trained five years in Police academy on as a specialist on the subject.
I think if two white guys were jimmying their way into a house people would call the police just to be safe if they didn’t recognize them and police would have had to respond, also if the person being questioned by the police had reacted in the way the police report and witnesses account of, would likely have been arrested.
Clearly both individuals, Gates and the police officer, are both very intelligent individuals. Gates seems to be being a reflexive person in ever sense of the term, this was illogical and silly behavior. He should be aware that he is not just hurting the police officer, but the police officers family, and African Americans who are mistreated by racist individuals who will now have their witness questioned based on this high profile story.
Many cops discriminate and abuse their power. I got attacked and cuffed by 3 officers with no cause and harrassed more times than I can even recall on a smaller scale–but people need to understand that when police (and society at large) make judgements about people based on more than just their race–it is a class issue (poor people of all colors get victimized), it is about gender, age, political affiliations, appearance, and many other things. Race, IMO, is historically the first thing that comes to mind–the dominant factor, unfortunately–but as long as people think it is the ONLY factor in the equation, you will never get people to fully respect the argument or the cause itself.
This is all a lot of hokey BS, that we wouldn’t even be discussing if Gates was pollka dotted. The fact is, this entire scenario could have played out the same way if Gates had been polka dotted, white, brown, or purple. I’m a white female, and I can assure you there are many ‘white’ people who get in the face of cops and get slapped in hand cuffs by white cops and black cops, that get injured wrongfully by white cops and black alike. There are white women who get treated badly by black cops and white cops, but nobody ever hears about that in the mainstream liberal news, it’s coverage of white on black. I was recently a part of the production company that presented a play to honor his story. Just an FYI, I was the only white person to work on the production. Can you imagine why? Maybe it’s because they know I don’t look at color but the person. It’s not the first time I worked with this production company. It was interesting to see how the darker skinned people raced out the lighter skinned people to play the whites in the drama. The black director used white “Zorro” masks for identification purposes. I don’t remember anyone getting up and screaming they was “racist” in their portrayal.

This is the first time a President of this great nation calls a police officer STUPID, even after recognizing that he did not know the facts.
And the fact is that this gentleman displayed a bully behavior. Being a scholar, he should have known to keep cool and respect the officers of the law, many of them are black and Hispanics.
President Obama must learn that he is the president of all Americans and rather that going around the world apologizing for America and not even once saying that he is proud to be an American (or maybe he isn’t) he should start to get us united to solve the problems we have.

When the tapes (Yep, they got tapes.) come out, it will probably prove what the witnesses have confirmed: the police report is accurate. Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. followed Sgt. James Crowley out onto Professor Gates’ front porch, verbally abused him and was arrested.
Speaking from personal experience, when you verbally abuse a cop, you generally get a free ride downtown. It doesn’t matter if you’re black, white, green, purple, or a DQ swirl-cone with cherry frosting. And despite what you would think, at the time things like these happen, “right” or “wrong” and nuanced thought on possible public opinion ramifications don’t come into it….
It’s also a weirdly hilarious coincidence that the cop teaches a class in anti-racial profiling techniques.
So, anyway, back to the predictions:
Sgt. Crowley will be demonized by many and will be defended by many, and both camps will be doing so for the wrong reasons: they have their political axe to grind or their own racial bias to promote.
He will eventually retire to a small town and star in his own TV show, complete with his very own deputy sidekick and a whole slew of funny-townie characters, all of them white, but none of them racist.
Professor Gates will continue the talk-show rounds, the pictures with Al Sharpton and Spike Lee, and generally become a revered Black Culture Icon, kinda the anti-Bill Cosby.
He will write a best-selling book on the experiences of Black Males in America – no more “publish or perish” for this guy.
He will also get a self-explanatory Tommie Smith and John Carlos tattoo on his forehead, so that he doesn’t have to pose like that all the time. Plus, the tat will look real cool at the sold-out Harvard lectures.
Our President, the esteemed 0-Man, who surprised me at least, by throwing off the traces of his Teleprompter and jumping in with both feet trampling all over his tongue, will have very little left to say. However his press secretary and other minions will also be making the rounds of different bloviating, talking-head shows, back-tracking, obfuscating, and generally trying to smoke screen the 0-Man’s way out of a predicament he should never have been in; he comes out of this the worst, looking not-very-smart; blind-faith worshipful cult notwithstanding.
White women in Cambridge will still call the cops when they see two black guys breaking down the door of a house.

Diddy…all whom campaigned and protested for change and once the President entered office they returned to calling you NIGGERS, BITCHES, and HOES! — I wish I were born in the 50’s.
