The controversy is arising because of the shows portrayal of Italian-American men referred to as Guido’s. Dominoes pizza has even pulled advertising spots out of the show due to the outrage.

I don’t know what’s the big deal… I was just in Jersey a few weeks ago and all of them in that age group are the same
I think anyone who has ever lived in or close to Howard Beach, Queens or any other inner city italian american neighborhood knows exactly how gaudy, trashy, ghetto, and utterly disgusting “guido’s” can be. The italian Americans are just pissed that their dirty laundry is being aired out on national TV. For so long black folks have been fooled into believing that we were the ghetto scum of the earth….I’m glad someone else is finally on blast.

After living in Brooklyn and Italy (the real Italy) for many years, I believe the “guidos” are simply a product of their environment. They are not their racist, Bensonhurst, kill Yusef Hawkins parents that we’re used to seeing. They are the listen to Outkast, “can’t we just get a long” generation. I go to a pizzeria in Brooklyn where it’s decked out in “Italian” paraphernalia and speak Italian to the owners and they look at me as if I come from Venus. I don’t know if it’s because I’m African American speaking fluent Italian or they front like they’re sooooo “Italian” (when they’re really not) and they realize they’ve just been busted (because they don’t speak a lick of real Italian). It’s almost like speaking Swahili or any other native African tongue to a black person that’s dressed in African garb… Nevertheless, Jersey, Staten Island, Long Island, Queens are mostly filled with gaudy, ghetto (if you will), outspoken girls and boys of all races.
Good point but you got lost with the Swahili part since Africa is a continent and everyone doesn’t speak the same language, lol… bad comparison.
I’m half Nigerian & Half Ghanaian there are over 152 tribes in Nigeria alone and they don’t all speak the same language…
I completely agree with you…I am also a black person who has lived in italy and speaks italian and when you compare the lifestyles of an Italian and an Italian-american its a lot different in most circumstances, besides family time and food. On this show, the kids are very proudly to be ‘italian’ but they aren’t really representing what being italian is really about. :-/

You watch any of the reality shows on BET MTV or VH1 and they get the most stereotypical people to portray these images. I don’t know how this got on racism/kings and queens/black and italian etc but the show is entertaining… its really not as serious as people are making it.
The fact that we aren’t willing to admit there are people like this in the world is ridiculous. This is why humanity can’t prosper, but hatred seems to shine all the time.

I think the show is hilarious, but what I’m bothered by is the fact that Dominoes has pulled out as a sponsor. Where is all the outrage when the “N” word in dropped insistently on other programs….why don’t the sponsors pull out then?! If the Italian-Americans want to refer to themselves as “guidos”, so be it!!! If no one wants to step in when (sadly) some of my brothers and sisters make a mockery of themselves, why should corporations care when Italian-Americans want to do it.
….and honestly, being from Jersey, that’s just what the shore is like. It’s not all “guido” and “greasy”, but they’re going to highlight all the venues and activities that spotlight the image MTV/Viacom is trying to present.
