No More Smelly Horse Rides Through Central Park???

If New York Governor David Patterson has his way, it may be the end of a New York tradition, he had this to say at a recent animal welfare event about the treatment of the horses that ride through New York’s famed Central Park:

“These animals are kept in stables that are too small, often they’re cold, they work long hours and they don’t have time off. … There was a horse about three months ago that got his foot caught on a parking meter and had to be destroyed—it’s awful. You know, it looks nice when you go to the park and see a horse-drawn carriage, but unless there is some way to care for these horses properly, and it doesn’t appear that there is, I think we should ban it completely.”

Several celebrities have already come forward to complain about the treatment of the New York City horses that get used like living cabs.  What do you think, is it better for the horses to go or stay???  Or do you not live in New York so you don’t give a shit?

I can’t tell you the last time I took a ride on one of these, but it’s so corny that it’s actually CLASSIC NY. Weirdly enough, I think I’d miss it.

My husband and I were in New York, and I had always wanted to go on them. They were pulling the horses in ( It was Saturday 18th) because of the storm coming in. I was bummed because it was our last night there, but happy they were taking the horses in. We were about 10 blocks away from where they all were going. One of the drivers pulled over and asked if we wanted a ride. We asked how much, and he said he was heading in, so whatever we wanted to pay. Well, that was stupid on our end. When we hoped off where he was going, he gave us flak for not giving him 100 bucks for a 10-15 minute ride (max). Jerk. Anyway, I agree, this is ALLLL about the money for these guys…
