What has Gucci ever dropped/put out that has shown any signs of rapping skills to even MENTION him as “Rap’s Next Big Superstar”? That’s just scary….

He put out a pretty decent, well-rounded album, actually.

Okay. I understand that Gucci isnt the best rapper but you gotta respect his grind. Dude has released at least 150 songs this year. Not to mention he already has his next album recorded. No he’s not Jay or Nas. His songs aren’t really about anything except drugs but so is 85% of rap. He’s Gucci. He’s different.

rapfan 12/22/2009 at 2:04 PM

@nika I was reading everyone’s comments but your comment stuck out…..you said you have to respect his grind because he released 150 songs…well wayne did too but it was better quality music……and then the next part that stuck out is…u said his songs are about anything really except drugs but so is 85% of rap, but then u say he is different, how is he different he 85% of rap is drugs and thats all he raps about?

Reply

nika 12/22/2009 at 4:39 PM

yea Wayne released better quality music, because he’s a better rapper…I never said Gucci was on Wayne’s level. But I give credit when credit is due and Gucci deserves credit because he’s a solid rapper…..and different doesn’t just refer to the subject of his music but his whole sound and style. In that way, Gucci is different.

Take everything you thought you knew about what REAL hip-hop skills are and throw it out the window. Apparently that’s what many new hip-hop artists/fans want you do. It is no longer about quality, it’s purely quantity as Nika commented. The problem with hip-hop today is too many women, children and otherwise shallow-minded people buy the shit and fuck up the numbers, so now, wack as artists that cater to females, children in middle America and dumb asses all over corner the market while REAL hip-hop falls on deaf ears because “the BEAT ain’t catchy enough” or “what they talkin bout is BORING or TOO DEEP”. Everything on the charts is hip-POP in my book… that’s what’s popular, not necessarily what’s GOOD HIP-HOP. Gucci Mane fits comfortably in that lane, popular music, right between Soulja Boy and Any rapper from New Orleans.

100% agree

Okay, let me clarify, I said you gotta respect his grind. But never did I say that he’s a better rapper based solely on that. I just said that he’s not total garbage.

I think most people don’t like Gucci because he’s not what you’re used to hearing on the radio and seeing on tv. He doesn’t have a six-pack and he’s not the most attractive person but he’s an okay rapper.

And if anything, Gucci is not pop but underground. That’s why alot of people are just talking about him now when’s been out for years slowing building up his fanbase.

@ Roosevelt: Before you go and throw every rapper from New Orleans in the same category, do yourself a favor and check for Jay Electronica. He’s from New Orleans and is real hip-hop. Not your typical rap artist from Cash Money or No limit. True lyricism. As for true hiphop, don’t believe it if its on the radio. It’s been processed.

I think that many of you have very low standards, or I must have lost my mind because I just do not get it. Goes to show that marketing is everything. Explains why the pet rock sold millions, when rocks are for free outside.

I like a couple of his songs, but in order to be the next big rap superstar he needs for his album to go platinum and i seriously mean that! U can have all the hype u want but if u aren’t movin units that means nothin.

rapfan 12/23/2009 at 9:23 AM

@nika I agree with you on certain levels, but to me Gucci is not that different. He reminds me of a knock off Jeezy/Shawty Lo……I just think today it is hard to match what other artists have done in the past…You are not gonna be able to rhyme better than Jay or Nas or 3000 or TI or Game or Wayne. You are not gonna be able to sell as much as 50 or snoop or Kast, or stay relevant as long as Scarface or Jigga….so since you can’t do all those things, I dont think artists try anymore. They just do whatever and people think its the next best thing…iono just my 2 cents.

tooreal 01/06/2010 at 7:26 PM

How the hell is he a knock off Jeezy! Gucci has more classics than Jeezy, more music period, and worked with more artist. Jigga ain’t all that either. Jigga and Game got a mixtape out right now with -145 votes. None of Gucci’s mixtapes are in the negative. You Dummies keep on trying to compare, and swear that he can’t rap but none of you really listen to the lyrics. Jigga don’t be rapping about jack most of the time. Gucci tells you in his rhymes “this is not hip hop, this is drug dealer music”, but you losers can’t find nothing else to hate on. Wayne is just a bunch of random metaphors with no direction. I’d rather listen to Gucci than someone signing to a prostitute or bragging on mixtapes about kissing Birdman on the lips. If you’re not hard and ain’t been in the streets with real dudes, then you’ll feel a more watered down industry type sound. Gucci is reaching out to real street dudes. That last song Gucci and Jeezy made, Gucci had a tighter verse, why? You should just go back to listening to 3000 try to sing in weird outfits.
