20-year old Lou Jing from Shanghai is now the talk of China after she competed in a reality show called “Go! Oriental Angel”, Lou’s multicultural background has become a national issue. According to CNN:

Lou Jing was born 20 years ago in Shanghai to a Chinese mother and an African-American father. According to her mother, who asked not to be identified in this report, she met Lou’s father while she was still in college. He left China before their daughter was born.

Growing up with a single mom in central Shanghai, Lou Jing said she had good friends and lived a normal life. “When I was young, I didn’t feel any different,” she said. But as soon as she stepped into the national spotlight on a Chinese reality television show called “Go! Oriental Angel,” Lou Jing became a national sensation — not necessarily because of her talent, but how she looked.

“After the contest started, I often got more attention than the other girls. It made me feel strange,” Lou said.

The reality show hosts fondly called her “chocolate girl” and “black pearl.” The Chinese media fixated on her skin color. Netizens flooded Web sites with comments saying she “never should have been born” and telling her to “get out of China.”

This is a perfect example of how your “haters” actually make you bigger….if they don’t get to you first.  Check out a performance and the news report after the jump.

The Chinese food that they give us is the fake Americanized greasy kind.. not the authentic healthy type that they eat in China. Trust me, it taste way different alot of steamed vegetables, boiled rice and seafood.
I went to a Jamaican restaurant here in Toronto, and all teh staff were Chinese. Imagine going to a Chinese restaurant with all black folk as staff? See any Chinese line up and eat greasy fried Soul Food/Caribean food? But you see a bunch of black eating that greasy Chinese food, supporting their businesses. Black folk walk up and eat healthy.

Talk about being racist. What do gooks have to with this article? Koreans and Chinese are not the same. You are just as terrible as those chinese who are hating on Lou Jing.

Wtf…she looks like she has a fake tan, haha.

She’s cute, but that one little clip of her singing seems like she has no talent. I’m sure it’s easy as shit to be a good dancer/singer in China. Muhfuckas got no flow/rhythm over there.

Females, in general, are barely accepted in China. So, i can imagine a Black female. Fuck em…

Racism is something that will never cease to exist. It’s a horrible belief but one we get reminded of daily. I was born in Jamaica and arrived here roughly around six years of age. My girlfriend of the last three years is Filipino/Japanese. The stereotypes we hear, the disgusted stares and quick, “he doesn’t deserve her” glances are in abundance when we are in public together. This is mainly from the older asian generation (men/women) but the ones of my age who are bothered aren’t asian/pacific islanders…it’s african american girls. Sad really. We cry racism daily and yet some posses the same level of racism/stereotypes as those they judge.

So what Lou is experiencing occurs everywhere generally…maybe some more than others but the harsh reality stems from our own insecurities and beliefs that intensify daily until it turns to outward dismay for another individual or collection of individuals. We are such a backward species

For all those too comprehension impaired to understand what I was trying to get people to realize is, that every “race” can be together except for African Americans. WE need to learn how to spend money with our own and stop relying on others to provide for us. I am sure WE knew what I was talking about but of course as always whenever Y’ALL see US talking about togetherness all of a sudden its racism. And while we’re on the topic of racism the non bastardized definition of racism is having concern for ones’ own race. So therefore why don’t you go do something more constructive with your time because apparently reading comprehension is not your strength. With that said Merry Kwanzaa and Happy Christmas.

She’s so gorgeous! if she was a little taller she could seriously easily be a model. She should get an agent and become a TV star here in the states.

The real question, as someone asked, is, where is her father?

Did he just go to a foreign country, dump his load and leave? The article states the father left before she was born but it did not say if he knew she was pregnant when he left. Such a big gap of information.

Also, while the comments made of her are atrocious, China has a history of being xenophobic. And the accepted norm for them is for people to have “light” skin and smooth black hair.

Would it have been more acceptable if she was 1/2 caucasian? Yes, for the simple fact that she would still end up blending in more even if she stands out. See my above statement.

The problem with ALL societies, even the most progressive ones, is that anyone who stands out too much becomes ostracised. It’s our human nature. It’s not as severe in multiracial societies but even then, the problems are still there. Rememer that China is populated by 99% Chinese. And while there are many ethnicities, most can still pass off as Chinese even with all the different racial features.

Even for myself, having grown up in a black neighborhood in the USA and living in Asia, when I see a black person (from any country) here, it is a very, very odd sight simply because of the sheer rarity of it. Caucasians not so much because they aren’t such a rare sight.

I still remember that I was one of 3 Asian kids in the black neighborhood and my best friend was a white kid. We stood out like sore thumbs(!) and believe me, the black community is JUST as racist as any other. But thankfully, extreme racism is not as insurmountable as it may seem. Most people are decent folks and will overcome their bias and racism given enough exposure; provided people take the time to mix and integrate.

The issue with Lou Jing is not that she is 1/2 black. It’s that she stands out like a sore thumb in a society that is xenophobic by nature (and again, xenophobia is an issue in most socieities) and physicaly doesn’t follow the “prescribed and accepted” appearance of “porcelin white skin, straight, black hair”.

It’s a racism issue; just not as simple as “she’s black so peope hate her” issue…. and racism isn’t *only* just directed at black people. It simply isn’t that simple.

greatest response so far.

as far as her father, it’s quite common for US military men who are based in asia to hook up and mate with asian women and leave before she even finds out she’s pregnant. so that might be the issue.

and i agree, the chinese might not be racist, just ignorant to anything that doesnt resemble them so much. kind of like painting your face green and walking around in the streets… nobody matches your color, so they will stare and talk.
