In a new book called “Why He’s A Saint” author Monsignor Slawomir Oder says the Pope who served from 1978 to 2005 normally self flagellated himself which is the ancient ritual of whipping himself over the shoulder, as popularized in The Divinci Code movie. According to Oder who says other priests normally heard him beating himself, “it’s an instrument of Christian perfection,” since the body is seen as a gift from God.
