Six Rutgers University Sorority Members Arrested Over Hazing

by admin on 01/29/2010 · 30 comments

A  young student pledging for the Sigma Gamma Rho sorority on the Rutgers New Brunswick campus has come forward to tell school officials she had to go to the hospital after being starved and hit with a wooden paddle over 200 times in 7 days, leading to 6 girls being arrested.  There is an acceptable amount of “hazing” if you want to make it into the type of organization that’s known for such activities, but we think they may have taken it a bit too far.  The school did too, the sorority has been suspended.

The girls are currently free on bail, but do you think they should have been arrested on the felony charge of aggravated hazing and face up to 18 months in prison??

As a Greek who went thru a similar situation in college. I hope these young ladies get a good lawyer. We were accused of hazing by a snitch, and charged with attempted murder, hazing, reckless endangerment, etc. Could have been in jail for 30 + years. However, thanks to my parents money and the good lord we were acquitted and then sued the dude for being a bitch and defamation of character! He will be paying me out his pay check for the next 30 years!

The point is that these young people have no honor, discretion or dignity now in days. They want to be apart of something but dont want to work for it. No one ASKED you to be apart of that organization you seeked it out for yourself. And i am pretty sure they did not just pop off and start stroking you with the wood out the blue( pun intended). You knew that shit was going to happen, you could not take the heat and you went bitch and to the cops. Be a grown man/women and just walk away. Instead you want to ruin the lives of 6 talented, smart black women who are minding their business and doing community service and positive programs for the campus. Not saying that you have to die or even be greatly hurt to join, but its YOUR choice. If you not down then leave us alone and be a GDI! Its not that serious.

Yess your very right it was the girls choice to join but at the end of the day it was also those 6 talented, smart black women’s choice to Involve them self in illegal activity Yall Greeks need to get off the fact that someone snitched and acknowledge that what some of yall do is ILLEGAL! I don’t understand why yall can’t see that. So the victim is a bitch because she spoke? Wow ok! well you know what they ruined their OWN lives because everytime they choose to pick up a paddle to strike someone they were risking their future

Again, what dont you understand about choice! If you drink and drive and run into a tree and die, aint nobody fault but yours! Not the bar tender, not the company that makes the drinks, its yours and yours alone! I never said some of the shit is legal. Alot of stuff grown people do on their is is illegal! But you would not understand cause you have no honor or loyalty. That bitch knew what she was getting into, just like everyone else who starts! Plus, you dont even HAVE TO DO THE “TRADITIONAL PROCESS”, just give your money and sign on the line and go about your way. No respect is lost man! Like i said before, if its not for you its not for you…..walk away! Why is that so hard to understand?

its not choice… its more you’re backed into a corner and you have one option…. get hazed or dont reep the “benefits” of the organization.

they starved her and hit her with a paddle for 7 day. 7 days!!!!! it’s abusive and cruel. taking abuse isn’t “working for it”. the girl probably didn’t think it would be that bad when she first went in for it. illegal activity is illegal activity. what if they had asked her to rob a convenience store? should she still have kept quiet from the cops? how about if they’d asked her to beat someone else with a paddle. you’d probably do it. I once collapsed unconscious after I’d stopped eating for three days. I can’t imagine seven. And another thing, it is serious. college students die from hazing every year. it may not be serious to you, but it definitely becomes more serious when it happens to someone you love. you sound like a sadistic bitch who would willingly taking part in hurting your peers if you knew you could get away with it. shame on you! the world needs less of you.

Awwww, boo hoo….You got paddled and deprived of some food….Ummm, male or female, don’t pledge a frat/sorority if you arent willing to get dirty/take some pain/sacrifice. Obviously, going into it, you are somewhat aware of potential hazing to come. No one’s making you do that stuff. If you can’t take it, quit or don’t pledge to begin with. Don’t go running to authorities, pressing charges when it gets to be too much. As I guy, you shoulda seen what we went through. And, as I mentioned, upon pledging you are aware/hear stories of what is to come to some extent. Man up, or get out/don’t pledge. I hope these girls get a good lawyer and get off…

To 1914 inches….
Being an undergraduate student I was thinking of joining a sorority, just because I saw them walk around campus all the time. But when I heard about the hazing process I didn’t have to think twice on my decision. Why can’t they find something productive and more useful. (besides community service) Beating a person 200 times and I know it wasn’t a simple slap is beyond me. The frats have it easy they walk around campus in silly costumes etc…
At the end you get some simple 3 letters to wear on your chest, and fell proud about.
Benefits might include what??? (your sisters looking out for you in a job, scholarship and the ridiculous fee you have to pay to be consider a “member”.)
I fell like the hazing process is beyond me. But I am a little voice so I can’t do much but say I am not willing for someone I don’t know or care about BEAT ME!
SIMPLE AS THAT!

I respect you for making a clear observation and deciding that it’s not right for you. What you and some other people call “hazing” is just that, whatever you see it as. Another may see it in a totally different way, no biggie. And the benefits of Greek like are different for everyone, no need to get into that. Be blessed

You do of course realize that your fraternities and sororities hazing are a complete waste of time, right? The fact that you have a lawyer who got you off doesn’t make you less guilty, but it confirms what most people believe about rich bitch fraternity boys. If there were any justice in the world they would have locked you up. By the way I was accepted into a Greek society solely on my grades. So the rules you are speaking of are archaic.

Frat/Soro whatever, there’s a point when this sh*t becomes unacceptable.

@1914 I respect what you all are trying to do for the most part but there are some brothers and sisters with misplaced aggression and sociopathic tendencies that just shouldn’t be involved in the hazing in process. Just because you are ‘in’ doesn’t mean everything they/you do is okay. Suffer/struggle sure, but nobody’s long term health or life should be in danger behind this!

…I was going to make a comment about these nappy headed ho’s going to prison for this but eh…

i agree, there are some sick sick sick twisted individulas who will not only HAZE you but torture you and make you do rediculous things such as drive them places or wash thier car and if you deny you get stroked. thats not worth being in ANY group.

Alleged? Na squash that it’s a FACT! Everyone at Rutgers knows these girls did it because 90 percent of Greek life haze at Rutgers. Bottom line is these are good students and productive people at Rutgers but they made a dumb ass choice. Hazing is illegal WTF don’t Greeks understand about that? You guys are juggling your whole life just to paddle and humiliate someone why because it was done to you, its history, tradition whatever. It’s stupid cause at the end of the day every now and then you’re going to get someone that’s willing to speak. Everyone thinks that no one is brave enough to come forward (snitch) whatever. That’s that simple minded “We Run Shit” Greek mentality well hey they found their match. I don’t understand how these girls and other Greeks can put their lives in the hands of people online. Hopping that after you beat their ass to a pulp they stay quite about it.

Rutgers has a zero tolerance level for hazing! The members of SGRHO and all BGLO’s are well aware of the consequences of hazing. The laws on hazing are so strict that a member can’t even ask a perspective member to do something as small as fix them a sandwich. These girls knew the rules and THEY threw her career away. These women engaged in illegal behavior. They will live with the consequences. Their actions are not condoned by the organization; in fact they are strictly prohibited. It is not whining, or minor. Abuse DOES NOT create sisterhood.

Please let it be known that all of the perspective members were on an unauthorized line. I’m pretty sure they didn’t know that but I’m the sisters of SGRO did. Also this took place Within Rutgers housing and outside of the normal pledging period! They broke all rules so they need the accept the consequences.

Rutgers is a hazing school

Yes they have a Zero tolerance level for hazing when an organization is caught or media attention is brought to the school like this situation here. Rutgers has a strict outline of what is considered hazing and every semester during the pledging periods those rules are openly broken. Every semester there are a handful of students walking around in military style wearing all black none of them can talk and depending on their organization their not allowed to take a shower! This goes on for 6 to 9 weeks the students see it and so do the faculty. Now according to Rutgers guidelines that is considered hazing but does the school do anything about it NOPE!

The location where the hazing took place is mostly monitored in the past and present by RA’s that are Greeks themselves. So everybody by passes the screams and yelling that goes on within that building from many different organizations. Rutgers needs to do a little bit more to stop whats been going on

Everyone makes choices in life. If it got hot, drop. Snitching will only make things worse for you and your family. This Greek life thing only makes sense to those who are apart of it. So for those of you who talk bad about something you have no comprehension about, don’t speak. It’s an unforunate situation but we learn that not everyone can be trusted.

Why do you need to join a sorority or frat? To make friends? To party hard? to enjoy this “Greek life?” Sounds pretty crappy to me. How about you do all these things yourself, and not rely on stupid bros or sisters? This is not a lifestyle people should be enjoying. Honestly, are you going to care about a frat or sorority when you turn 30 or 40? No. Not really. Just the friends you make from it…. Which you could have made without being in a frat or sorority.

@1914inches: You are the coolest guy ever. I’m glad you were hazed, abused and degraded to get where you are today. You are a champ at life. You sacrificed a piece of yourself for nothing. Smart kid.
