Tomorrow’s the day. Lil’ Wayne is allegedly set to begin serving his one year sentence for gun charges on New York’s infamous Rikers Island for a 2007 incident tomorrow February 9th, and here’s what he should expect according to MTV:
“Lil Wayne is gonna be OK,” retired NYPD detective and noted “hip-hop cop” Derrick Parker told MTV News. “While he’s in jail, it’s a matter of fact they may not put him with the general population because of who he is and his popularity. They might lock him down and let him come out with a supervisor and stuff like that [when he's] in the main area — but he’s definitely going to be treated differently.”
According to Parker, the way Wayne will be handled will depend on safety concerns for the rapper as well as an effort to maintain as much normalcy at the facility as possible — it won’t resemble pampered treatment by any means. Parker said despite Wayne’s small physical stature and his propensity to signal a particular gang affiliation in his rhymes, the rapper won’t have much to fear in terms of extortion, bullying or worse.
“Wayne is from the streets, from the Magnolia Houses in New Orleans, so I’m sure those guys have been in jail or locked up at some point,” Parker said. “So being in prison is no big deal to them. Plaxico [Burress] isn’t built for that — he’s the type of guy that’s never been locked up like that before. He’s gonna need a coach or someone to tell him what to expect, since he’s not used to that.”
The detective also goes on to say that Lil’ Wayne won’t be forced to cut his signature dreads…but enough bad news. We’re sure he’ll be fine. If you could write a letter to Lil’ Wayne what would you tell him during these “last 24 hours” or so in front of bars.

Of course he’s going to have isolation & security while in prison. He’s a celebrity. If the prison guards on his payroll, he will have nothing to worry about, in terms of security & in maintaining a sense of normalcy that he became accustomed to on the outside. Those 8 months are going to fly by. Does anyone remember T.I.’s stint in the bing? Hardly. Just like Pac, I bet that they will release the best albums of the careers whenever they release their next projects, respectively, due to having so much time to collect their thoughts, without having all of the distractions from the outside world. They’ll be more focused, plus they’ll have some new stories to tell… not to mention, their “street cred” will be at it’s peak with the kids who don’t know any better than to associate jail time with their perceived “realness”. It’s actually a somewhat of smart move, from a marketing standpoint, as sad as that is.
