Very sad.  The first day of the Olympic games in Vancouver, British Columbia didn’t go as expected after a luger from the Republic of Georgia was killed after flying off his sled while racing.  And these guys go faaaaaast.  Our condolences to his family.

Watch the video of the accident above which is slightly graphic and see the response of the Svein Romstad, Secretary-General of International Luge Federation, who says the athlete made a small mistake after the jump.

This is so tragic. They knew that the route would be too fast but let the athlete(s) ride on it anyways.

Yea why would they let the athletes use the luge if they knew it could be unsafe?

Definately tragic, seems like a mistake alright, not upon the part of this skillful young athlete, but on the engineering of that curve. My thoughts and prayers go out to this young man’s family and friends as well. I also hope this tragic loss of life will be a measure preventive in providing more severe safety measures for these athletes.
