Seattle Teens Forced To Sign A Contract To Prevent Them From ‘Grinding’ At Dances

With the lyrics in the latest pop songs this is like giving a dog a steak but not letting them lick it, according to MSNBC:

Across the nation, public schools have been putting the brakes on grinding — also known as freak dancing — where partners repeatedly rub their pelvises together in a sexually suggestive manner. Some schools have canceled dances altogether. Others are implementing dress codes and even requiring students to sign agreements that spell out acceptable behavior. And some schools are turning to more unconventional means, such as Pacific Hills School in West Hollywood’s recent threat to turn up the lights and play Burt Bacharach if students started to grind, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Principal Jill Hudson threatened to cancel future dances at Nathan Hale High School in Seattle following “inappropriate touching” at last fall’s homecoming dance. Before students could be allowed to have another dance, she asked them to come up with a plan for more appropriate dance conduct. Because of this process, the February semi-formal has been delayed until March, and students will have to sign a dance contract geared toward eliminating “lewd contact” before they can attend, says Hudson. At the dance, they’ll get their wrist band cut off after one offense and will be asked to leave after a second.

What do you think is Nathan Hale High School’s policy too strict or are they doing the right thing?

The school is doing the right thing. Its a school dance, not a club. Hell, some freak dancing is even inappropriate for the clubs. The school has a greater responsibility than other establishments. The students are still children under their care and have the rest of their adult lives to rub up on eachother if they wanna.

I used to fingerbang chicks at high school dances so I don’t see what the big deal is…

It’s a 50:50. The kids are just doing what they see on TV, that is over-saturated with people like Gaga and Beyonce, dancing nearly naked and provocatively all over TV. So media has a huge amount of responsibility when it comes to the way kids conduct themselves. Then, there’s the parental argument, watch what your kids watch, and perhaps they wont be so physical when it comes to expressive dancing. (But then one could argue that parents don’t have control over ALL media their kids see) Then there’s also the argument that they are just having fun…

I don’t think the school is wrong, but lets not let that get out of hand now, we don’t want to go back to the day where you slow danced with your arms held out straight on your partners shoulders/waist…

When it comes to teenagers some things are beyond the control of their parents and school officials. However, things like school dances, which are within the control of parents & schools should be regulated with proper conduct guidelines despite what’s on tv and in the media.
