Singer India Arie Calls Lady Gaga & Beyonce’s ‘Telephone’ Video Socially Irresponsible

by admin on 03/22/2010 · 44 comments

Apparently India Arie went on a small rant on her Twitter page about the music video that’s got everyone talking – Telephone.

Don’t be offended this is all MY opinion… Am I the only one who thinks the “telephone” video is going a bit too far?

I’m not referring to the abstract nature of the video … I’m talking about the IMAGERY – the unspoken back story, the language the message

I agree gaga is being her image .. I dig her creative mind But still … Thers a such thing as socially irresponsible… I’m just sayin.

Its not long before somebody does a straight NAKED video. Not like Alanis morrisette “thank you india” like NAKED dancing around. LOLhahaha

Let’s be CLEAR! I know it gaga M.O. – I don’t live under a rock. And I get that a lot of work put into it. I’m talking social responsability

There’s an artist ever 10 years who pushes the envelope … but its bout to fall off the Table. When is it too far?

I respect the creative mind but disagree with the “choices” as a dish meant to be served for mass consumption ..

Crazy to me that the Dark, underbelly, s shock at all cost thing is a TREND like asymetrical hair and big shoulder jackets .Slippery slope!

Love life. 6 year old at the store old her mom say who’s your favorite singer

This girl is CUTE! She says “india arie” “aaaaaand?” Her mom promots her she says “beyonce “aaaand” her mom says again “Lady gaga”

Mom turns to me and says “but I won’t let her watch the “telephone” lolhahahaahha! Haha! Tooo Funny.

We think everybody should get over it, the video is scandalous but no more than Quentin Tarantino Lite. Speaking of, Gaga’s rumored to be appearing in an upcoming flick from the eccentric director, so we can really see her get crass.

Opinions are cool and should be respected… With that said, here is mine. It’s not an artist’s responsibility to teach values to children. And the U.S. Is slowly getting closer to the amazing creativity that has been the norm in other countries in the world. people are growing up faster! That video is insane and if it wasn’t for all the taining B.S. In our music, it could have been labeled as the closest thing to Michael Jackson’s thriller. If people don’t like it, don’t watch it. Unplug your TVs and computers and read a book. We need to get our verbal skills up anyway.

I agree.

USA is behind in this. India arie having problem with this so close to nudity is silly. There should be nudity allowed especially for all. I see children at nude beaches in Florida. It’s not a big deal. If you teach your child correctly they will understand. Nudity so overrated in this country.

word up. but where do we draw the line a society? I mean why not just show porn in prime time and tell parents to just unplug if they don’t like it.

Fool's Gold 03/22/2010 at 4:07 PM

Nudity isn’t the issue but I don’t think it’s that simple. I think it’s what they’re doing with their nudity [selling it] that parents may have an issue with.

You’re right it’s not the responsibility of artists to teach values and morals, but who is suppose to when the parent isn’t around? As a teacher I see what this type of irresponsibility is doing to young minds on a regular basis. I once remember going on the playground in the back of my school back in 2003, and watching a group of 7 and 8 year olds imitate Beyonce’s ‘uhoh’ dance. Seven years later I see one of the girl who is now 15 and 14 and she’s pregnant, with tatoos all over her body and clearly not ready to be a parent.

This type of mindless entertainment that is considered “art” by the masses and media is simply allowing artist to do what ever they want and not have any responsibility for what they’re putting out there.

It must change. Instead of Gaga using her obvious singing ability to promote herself as an artist she’s going to the extreme and trying to “push the envelope”. When is enough…enough!

You seriously cannot blame Beyonce and GaGa when a 14, 15. 16, etc year old get pregnant. You’re an idiot if you truly believe that.

I see where you are coming from as a teacher but the responsibility does not fall on the artist. When time for Parent/Teacher, that should be expressed to the parent about their behaviour.

Growing up, DJ Quik, Dre (the whole west coast) was what I used to listen to BUT my DAD explained the difference betweeen entertainment and reality and threatened to take away my “entertainment” if I acted according to what I was listenin to….He didn’t go on a rage and blamed the artist because I’m his responsibility not Quik’s/Dre’s/Lady of Rage’s.

Get what I’m sayin…

Danni 03/23/2010 at 11:41 AM

I’m not saying they need to be responsible for raising someone’s child, but they should take some responsibilty for what they put out there as music and not be shocked when someone is on them for their music when it’s immoral and unecessary all in the name of art.

Fool's Gold 03/22/2010 at 12:30 PM

I agree with both points of this argument but it varies from artist to artist. Lady Gaga has never offered herself as a role model or anything of the sort but Beyonce regularly states how she wants continue to be a role model for young girls. My opinion is that Gaga has no social responsibility but Beyonce, and any artist that desires to be a role model, does. If you put yourself out to be that person then you should act accordingly.

As far as what is being shown on TV, it’s the network’s decision and not the artists’.

Art is so contrived these days that people try to pass anything ol thing off as ‘art’ and ‘pushing the envelope’. Everybody is looking for praise, fame & money. They’re willing to accept awards and accolades for their creativity but no one wants to take responsibility for the damaging side effects. At some point life does begin to immitate art. Should artists keep selfishly ignoring it, shrug it off as some one else’s problem and further perpetuate the ‘every man for himself attitude’? I’m afraid that if we continue down this path, it will result in the downfall of our society. We won’t see the enemy coming because we’re so into ourselves and are so easily seduced.

I agree!!! I really don’t even watch TV or listen to the radio often b/c there is nothing of substance on either one. I’d rather listen to some old soul music, read a good book, or watch a good movie than watch the junk that’s out there now. Anything crazy and different is considered “art” – yeah well I guess to each it’s own, but what about substance?

i dont understand what she’s sayin she needs to be socially responsible for – the nudity? so the dancing in thongs? did she complain about ciara or britney’s videos as well?
why this one?
is it the ‘killing’ of the bf?
the kill bill theme?
maybe she should read some of the back story on the video as well.
as parents and role models – we all need to EDUCATE younger folks on the difference between fantasy and reality – as well as right and wrong, and what’s correct in a public setting and what’s not.
done and done.

So that video is suppose to be done in public? You have Gaga getting stripped down in jail…and her dumb behind showing her naked body against some bars. Then she makes out with a guy, who’s clearly homosexual…and this is callled art.

They’re running around in the Pussy Wagon from Kill Bill. What responsible parent would let their 7 year old watch Kill Bill and not see a problem with it? Yet when these same concepts are set to music, it’s “art”.

I expect this from Gaga, but Beyonce’ is a huge disappointment. She’s been one for me for some years now. She obviously has the talent and ability to be a legend but she keeps depending on some “gimick” to get her over. It’s redundant and ridiculous. But us as the consumers are really at fault, because if we didn’t buy this crap and voiced our displeasure with mediocrity more often, these artist would have no choice but to step their game up.

don’t like it- don’t watch it. There are so many movies that have worse things going on than this video and somehow people are not criticising them that much. TV channels shouldn’t play this video too much in early hours, that’s it.
Don’t blame artists or performers for creating whatever the hell they want to create, don’t blame media for showing it and selling it, don’t blame people for liking it and buying it.
Blame parents for not teaching their kids to know right from wrong and enterteinment from reality. That is really the biggest issue of this whole situation- parents dont have or dont want to have time for their kids, or simply dont know how to teach them basics about life. That needs to be taken care of, not Gaga wanting to do a colorful, funny video to sell her shit.

Good points everyone. Ultimately what I was trying to say is, there needs to be less boundaries in music. Hard to say it, but our daily lives will be effected. I’m a rap artist and I love seeing stuff like this. Overall, it proves we do care about things we don’t see from most artists… ARTISTIC CONTROL! Maybe the industry is changing from the repetition.

By watching the video “Telephone’ one can clearly realize that it’s staright Lady gaga because even though beyonce as we all know and love loves to takes risks musically and always succeeds when she does does it would not make such a video like lady gaga!!! Beyonce has what alot of these watered down bubble gum singers out there today don’t have and that is the the total package!!!!!!!!!!! she has the vocals of a bonafide pentecostal woman, the beauty of a Queen, and the presence of a rose!!

Kbellat 03/26/2010 at 8:10 PM

Beyonce’ is a disgrace to Women of Color, Diana Ross said it best when she said “she didn’t have to shake all around and gyrate around to make it or to be seen. Her vocals are inferior to every singer out today there are too many singers out there that are way more vocallly talented and they get little recognition cause half of their body isn’t showing. To compare her to any thing of the Kingdom of God is blasphemy, she doesn’t portray anything remotely close to being a God fearing person. I’m not a hater she is doing her thing she just doesn’t know she don’t have to be like that she gained her stardom and was onto since she been out. She just has a level or responsibility to uphold whether she wants to or not she is in the public eye.

Ugh, and to think I actually have to explain this. It’s not just about the morals of children it’s about the morals of women and adults and people as a society. Some people including adults are actually really sensitive to naked imagery. Do you know what that means? I mean seriously…? KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS. Therefor we can’t have naked this and that scattering all over the place because technically it makes some people very uncomfortable. It’s not just the physical effects that these images have on me it’s the mental also. The crude view and nature these types of videos reveal. The types of message it sends. The objectification of our very own sexual gender. It’s not in good taste, it’s not something you really want to see. And Gaga does the same thing over and over, Actually the media promotes nothing but sex. And I don’t wanna hear that crap about “sex sells” deal with it. Does it? I mean guys might love it because they want stimulation non-stop but I don’t think women want to see other women in that nature unless they’re actually like that. Lets be honest here. So therefor, technically these celebrities are just catering to men who don’t even buy their album. I’m not totally against “sexy” being used to sell music but I do think there’s a line between sexy and sexy/raunchy/naked/thongs? I mean there is definitely a line there and for good reason! I just wished that more people could see that line and keep it there!!!! I’m sick of always being uncomfortable because some bitch is about to get naked. There’s a time and place for everything.

Bliss 03/25/2010 at 11:47 PM

Not only that the song freaking sucks! She’s only selling us sex because she’s not attractive or as some like to say “ugly”. She probably feels she couldn’t sell her music without it? The 500 pounds of makeup she wears masking her face says it all.

But whatever…I know my rant is pointless in a world filled with _______.

In the midst of so much controversy between Lady Gaga, Indie Arie and Beyonce, I would like to invite everyone to check http://www.highschooljamz.com (Positive music for our youth and the entire family). Great singles that address issues of suicide, self esteem, critical thinking etc. Here is positive music produced by platin…um writers and producers and performed by high school students with GPAs of 3.0 and above. If india arie dont like the song, lets see her do better, she’s upset because she dont have a hit like this. STOP HATING!!!!!!! India Aire is no where near as successful as beyoncee and lady gaga, she needs to get a life and it is pathetic that she had to draw attention to herself by putting others down, because she is no where near as popular as they are. Also wat is responsible is being yourself, men over sexualize things all the time, women have the right to be sexual if they want. they dont have to be responsible to anyone. There doesnt need to be censorship, Hiding things wont make it go away. everyone bashes everyone else instead of LETTING PEOPLE BE THEMSELVES. get a life india arie and lets see you do better. family oriented, please…… there are different opinions, not everyone has to be conservative. people have to grow up sometime
