The World’s First Facebook Home Robbery!

by admin on 03/26/2010 · 7 comments

Keri McMullen and Kurt Pendleton who are residents of New Albany, Indiana left a status update on their Facebook page saying they would not be home for a concert and during that same period their house was burglarized.  Having recently installed cameras on the property of the house, they have footage of a man breaking into the house who they believe added them as a friend on the social networking site Facebook about six months ago.   Here is Keri’s statement to CBS:

“I think the social networking sites are good to have,” she said. “You just have to be smart about it. Because just because you’re trustworthy and a nice person does not mean everyone on your Facebook is. So you can’t put your address — my address wasn’t even listed — or your phone number or that you’re home alone or going out of town.”

Can you really blame Facebook???

if anyone blames Facebook, Myspace, Twitter or any other social site for this foolery, you’re sadly mistaken.

If you decide to add individuals you don’t know as friends just because; you open yourself up for different possibilities once you begin posting updates about not being home. Who actually post such things anyway, “I won’t be home tonight because I have a concert?” Nonetheless, we and the law can not always hold external forces responsible for internal matters. It’s a sad error of judgment and hopefully with the heightened levels of postings online, people will utilize better judgment.

In a world of psuedo celebrities, reality shows, and people being famous for absolutely nothing, Facebook has become another outlet for the average Joe to persue their desire for a piece of that instantaneous fame by providing unnecessary detailed personal information to the world. People are willing to scrafice their better judgement just to feed their egos.
