Do You Think A Mosque Should Be Erected @ Ground Zero In NYC?

by admin on 05/07/2010 · 28 comments

The American Society for Muslim Advancement and the Cordoba Initiative have presented a plan to the New York City community board that would see a 15-story community center including a mosque erected at Ground Zero.  The idea has angered some residents and family members of the victims who lost their lives at the site on September 11, 2001.  Board members have already unanimously voted in support of the project causing some outrage.  Director of the Muslim society Daisy Khan gave the following statement:

“It will have a real community feel, to celebrate the pluralism in the United States, as well as in the Islamic religion,” Khan said. “It will also serve as a major platform for amplifying the silent voice of the majority of Muslims who have nothing to do with extremist ideologies. It will counter the extremist momentum.”

What is your take on the situation LIFERS???

um. it doesn’t seem like a good idea.

so many people consider islam as a diametrically opposed enemy of the US (this is not true) and use 9/11 as proof – this would not go over well with them.

in order to do public works and to deliver policy – you have to consider that the average american’s thought process day in and day out is close to the reasoning faculties of a 6th grader. In other words, if you start making junior high or above “level” complex decisions – you start losing so many people as to face too much competition.

The argument by Daisy Khan is flawed but worthy of discussion. however the 9/11 monument is not the platform for it.

I would like to see a multi faith gathering, not only for muslims and catholics, or jews. something that combines people. But why not a mosque, if their would be other religious monuments? A catholic church at a playground Ant, love that way of thinking……………!!!

btw i dont know if you lifers are aware of it. But Real Estate and Investment management globally is highly influenced by money from the gulf and middle east.

I think it’s acceptable. I don’t think a religion should be criticized for the actions of a few individuals within it. It sounds like a good plan and sorry but some of those people getting angered are just ignorant and need to be more mature. They’re being blinded by their grief and that’s not okay. I understand the loss, trust me, but I don’t think it’s right.

As an American Muslim, I believe this country can’t even deal with racism properly, so it’s no wonder thar we are still dealing with Muslim and the right to practice Islam.

Why didn’t people stop driving convertables after JFK was shoot. So why is it that the space needs to be keep clear. They didn’t knock down the plantations after slavery. If we (white america) cause pain it to be forgotten, but let some brown people cause them pain and no one can forget it!!!!

So if black people have to get over our centuries of terror, than white people need to learn you get what you dish out. So if the white man doesn’t like the end result, maybe he should change his approach!!!!!!

You do have a point. But not everyone will say or admit what you think because off backlash. I think Americas biggest problem is mistaking their Ignorance for Patriotism. The only reason I can think of this not to be built is that the victims family and so many Americans have not gotten pass the stage of forgiveness and as far as they are concerned. Muslims are the new Niggers. Evil suicide Niggers. Until they have gone through years of healing without prejudice towards Muslims (or any other race) this will not change.
