I liked this video. The song is hot! I like the direction that she took the video in. Considering that she’s the child from an interracial relationship, I would imagine that this topic would hit close to home for her. It’s an interesting angle that they used, showing the evolution through time of that young couple, while they experienced the same stigma & discrimination, during each decade, which forced them not to be together. Although it isn’t as taboo today to see or be involved in that kind of a relationship, I wonder why they chose not to be together at the end of the video, unless her family’s bigoted disposition still remained.

I also found interesting how they subtly suggested that even though technology, trends & styles have evolved, our society’s overall collective mindsets have not. Segregation still exists; though it’s either self-imposed segregation (or classism) that mostly divides us, today. The point made isn’t as blatant as those made by Civil Rights activists & performers during their era, but, neither is the level of discrimination as prevalent &/or domineering as it was in those days. Yet the point clearly remains. At any rate, as you can see, it’s been a thought provoking experience for me, so Ms. Keys accomplished her mission, I suppose.

I loved it, music videos rarely capture my attention these days, but loved the concept.

this is a sobering video. you see the rehashing of ridiculous themes generation after generation with different eras of people playing out the same parts over and over again.

it’ an awesome out of the box intelligent approach to this song. I really dig it.

disclaimer: i am not a hater. the only part of the video i didn’t like were the cutaways back to alicia keys. yes she’s sexy and the cutaways only made me want to smash her more and hope that swizz beatz gets deported, but the cutaways themselves take away from the narrative and diffuse rising tension. You see enough of her in the video that the cutaways are totally unnecessary.

otherwise, this is an awesome video. great work – great song.

here’s to more great music in 2010. i’m ready.

ur absolutely right about the cut aways being unnecessary. Altho, I dont 2nd ur initial reason (cuz u want to smash her lol) but I definitely agree that she’s already in the video enuff and the real time cut aways do nothing extra for the video.

As a white guy that primarily dates outside of my race, I approve of this video and can relate to it all too well.

I wonder how alicia feels about jill scott’s statements… interesting.

Jill Scott’s statements were not racist, She talked about that unconscious sting a black woman feels when seeing a good successful brother with a white woman and the background history on why that sting may still be happening. Jill is not the first to say or feel it nor will she be the last.

I love the song and it is funny how she put the race twist on it when the video could have easily have been about doing the “unthinkable” with a married man – blank stare.

The fuck outta here….Jill Scott is indeed a racist hefer. If you feel a “sting” when seeing someone with a person of another race, then you are clearly a racist bigot. Her reasoning behind it was such bullshit. Fuck Jill Scott.
