This one never seems to get old, this time CNN gives it a stab.  Anderson Cooper highlights a project that shows how kids stereotype people based on the color of their skin….

As they say, “you want to know the truth ask a child.” I watched the show during it’s initial airing and I must say the children speak more openly and with a rather sound intellect. What I must add though is how as children, we are impressionable and at times depending on the parental/adult figure present, our views tend to change. So I ask, did their view on the subject come across how it did because it was orchestrated by a middle age Caucasian male? Would the views alter if said adult were an elderly Hispanic male? What about 20-something year old Black woman?

Nonetheless, this story has been told since the 40′s and like one child mentioned, we used to judge people by the color of their skin but today we judge them by who they’re inside. This is what we yearn to have today and not just amongst Black/White but within our own communities because as sad as it is to hear/see segregation between Black/White, I think it’s even worse when this segregation occurs within a Black community. How could we expect others to accept who we are, when we can’t accept our own neighbor?

Its not just white people though. Even as blacks, a lot of people view light-skinned as better than dark-skinned.

THANK YOU. People act like its just white people who hold the crown on racism. It may have been like that at one time but in 2010, I think its pretty 50/50

this makes me soo sad. ive even experienced bias within my own family. im pure mexican, my dads light skinned, my mothers dark. when i went to visit my dads side in mexico, they didnt acknowledge me much because i was so dark, they thought i couldnt be my dads child and instead flocked to my light skinned brother. seriously this topic is way too controversial its sad.

Racism is taught. And in the black community racism is often a self-fulfilled prophecy. My sister had to dam near cut off my brother in law’s nutts to get him to stop telling my nephew that because he’s black he’s automatically going to have a harder time succeeeding. These days whites and blacks are equally responsible for continuing the spread of hatred and racism.

I think its 50/50 as well. I think as the Older Generations die off, America will get better. Everything we learn is from the previous generations. And that has us fighting an up hill battle. But it will be won, or at least we will get closer to where the line of Racism should be. You should embrace your Race and recognize we are all different and respect that fact. Voluntary Segregation will always exist, but we should accept that and still try to treat everyone equal… And from my experience being white in an Majority Black School (like 20 White kids in whole Elementary School), Blacks kids are harder on other black kids about being dark skinned. It sure wasn’t the 20 white kids in the school saying that shit. We knew better, most of us, ha. Respect Race. I love being White. But I can see how my friend Doug loves being Black.

I agree with the statement about the older generations dying off so this issue could get better. As a darked skinned Latina I always had a lot of trouble fitting in in elementary school because i didn’t speak “black” enough to fit in with the black people(hell knows what this means) the hispanics just thought i was black and the whites didnt want anything to do with me so yeah this issue exists and its very very sad

Are people living in the twilight zone?! Why are people so surprised about the results? If you believe that we don’t live in a racist country you are delusional. For a little insight on the matter of racism in this country I suggest you read “The End of Blackness”. Hopefully the title will have you curious. Take responsibility for your own education and read. Even books or articles that you usually would not pay any attention to are worth your curiosity. Personally I think that it is every black parent/guardian’s responsibility to educate their children about the negative effects of “Fair Skin is Better Than Dark Skin” complex. It is ridiculous to encourage that kind of thinking. I think it is fair to say that there are a lot of white people in denial. This is a white country that encourages the idea that white is always better(White people can’t ever get their hands dirty and People of Color can’t ever get their hands clean). We see it all over magazines and tv. Frankly I’m tired of seeing ALL white EVERYTHING! It is definitely time for a change of perspective. Being white is not the norm!!!
GET YOUR MIND RIGHT!

Oh yea just another thought. Do you notice how nobody is ever upset about any injustice in this country unless it directly effects their own race? EX: The rate of blacks in jail in comparison to every other race. I don’t see any Asians, Whites or Hispanics up in arms about that. I think everyone should be motivated to change any biased race statistics in America not because the person its affecting looks like you, but because all prejudice and injustice is wrong.
