It is possible that Angelina Jolie will play Cleopatra in director Scott Rudin’s historical biography called Cleopatra: A Life.  We think she would make for a good Cleopatra….. Do You?

Love how Egyptians, Black Africans, Asians etc… can all be portrayed by White people in Hollywood. Tarzan, The Last Samurai, Moses… might as well keep the party going with a White woman from L.A. playing the African Queen Cleopatra. HEY… they could even cast the little White kid next to her as the boy King Tutankhamen! Let’s just make the WHOLE WORLD WHITE while were at it!!! Wow… it is Friday isn’t it???

smh.

But didn’t Elizabeth Taylor play Cleo back in the day? Either way, I don’t want to see Angelina or any other white woman play that role.

Cleopatra wasn’t Egyptian. She was originally from Macedonia, Europe. So yeah, she was white. Sorry to break your bubble.

C’mon Son!!!! (in my best Ed Lover……) Roosevelt took the words right out of my mouth… sigh….. I like Angelina and although she is culturally “in tune” with the rest of the world, she should have turned that role down and told them to get an Egyptian actress to play Cleopatra…..

damn, lifers… is y’all white or self hating and unempowered? take your pick. you should know your history. cleopatra was not white and was not of european descent, in fact she was the opposite- black and of african descent. not even halle berry could play her, that would be politically and historically incorrect. there was genuine african spirit in cleopatra. any other choice would continuing the assassination of images of blacks and africans in the media. when can we play ourselves in our past light? when can we be represented with authentic messages? this has got to stop. they telling us black isn’t beautiful and it don’t matter, it does matter or else you wouldn’t be trying to hide it…

think iman or liya kebede, not angelina “pucker face” jolie pitt.

Cleopatra was Macedonian Greek.

Cleopatra was Greek, not Egyptian. Her ancestor, the first Ptolemy, acquired Egypt when the empire of the deceased Alexander the Great was divided among his chief generals.

really? 06/11/2010 at 6:39 PM

bye white lady, as much as hollywood wants to portray her as white, the reality of it is she was black.

She was not. Again people, Macedonian Greek. Go read nefore you start going off about shit you don’t know about.

Many believe that Cleopatra’s father’s mother may have been a concubine from Nubia or Alexandria. Thats why she liked to align herself with the Egyptians, even by learning their language. She used this to her advantage politically, too. Just like Obama was able to use his race for his advantage.

Again, she was not black…

We are ALL descendants of Africa (everybody on this earth)!!! Even more so in antiquity… Cleopatra, unlike the rulers prior to her, considered herself Egyptian and identified with Africa and not Greece. Cleopatra may not have had dark skin but she damn sure didn’t have white pasty skin. She was of mixed heritage. Her father was a product of the Greek “rulers” breeding with their Egyptian or Nubian concubine. The offsprings (children) of these relations were given privileges not offered to “common” folk. It’s just like the offspring or children of slave “masters” here in America that raped the women on the plantations; hence the creation of some of the Historically Black Colleges and Univ. (HBCU’s) Some of the “sympathetic” slave owners did not want their white children going to school with their mixed children and many gave money to or built separate schools (HBCU’s) in order for their mixed children (mainly boys) to be educated. (I must also note that most HBCU’s were est. by freed slaves and churches; just FYI.)
My point is, we are ALL one way or another descendants of Africa. Period. Point. Blank.

Touchy subject at best and one I would consider a political topic as opposed to historically driven. Is or should Cleopatra VII be consideres Black or was she merely a descendent of Greek Macedonia? Well a yes or no isn’t that simple. Thwir lineage is so overwhelmed with inbreeding, one couldn’t depict easily where ones ancestry begins and ends. So the parents of some could be from anywhere; kings may have one or two children with slaves or commoners, but that isn’t certain. The genetic lineage of the family is severely chaotic and scholars can’t conclude on the topic but as African Americans, without avail, sge must be Black due to her aura and Egyptian location.

The problem with that is “race,” in the manner one knows it today, was not the same association during that period. For argument sake, she was the first in the lineage of rulers from her family to speak Egyptian and many associate this to her having a more than normal connection with Egypt…in other words Cleopatra V may have been a concubine for Ptolemy XII Auletes, but that doesnt mean said concubine was Black African, etc. Learning the language could just as easily been a political motive due to the rough years of her earlier rule.

So to conclude, the answer is not clearly defined. the questioning of her race came into debate by writer J.A. Rogers (Jamaican-American), with his book “World’s Great Men of Color.” But he destroyed the family lineage and was confused members of the family so his credibility was lost. But no one knows for sure if she had a Black lineage or not, so this topic is inconclusive. This debate is a misrepresentation of Shakespeare’s “Anthony and Cleopatra.”

Great answer! I think that the lead role can be played by either a white or a black person, it should matter.

“might as well keep the party going with a White woman from L.A. playing the African Queen Cleopatra”

Cleopatra was GREEK! She was the last Ptolemaic Pharaoh. She had Greek ancestors, Greek family members. She was NOT Egyptian.
