Should 70-Year Olds Be Giving Birth?!

by admin on 06/15/2010 · 3 comments

Damn scientists love their guinea pigs…..according to the NY Daily News:

Just 18 months after giving birth, the world’s ‘oldest mother’ is dying. Rajo Devi Lohan, who holds the record for being the oldest woman to give birth at age 70, says she is too weak to recover from her controversial IVF pregnancy, the Daily Mail reported today. Lohan, now 72, suffered from internal bleeding and her womb ruptured following her Caesarean section.

The Daily Mail reports that even in her weakened condition, Lohan ignored doctors’ orders to stay on bed rest. Instead, the Indian woman exhausted herself daily by crouching outside to milk the family buffalo. “The doctor never warned me it was dangerous to have a baby at my age,” she said.

Her doctor, Anurag Bishnoi, denied there was any connection between her pregnancy and her illness and instead emphasized how important Naveen’s birth had been for Lohan. Bishnoi also shocked critics Monday by announcing that his clinic had just delivered triplets to a 66-year-old woman.

See the news report of the mad scientists’ latest project after the jump….is this alright???

honestly, having difficulty conceiving is evolution’s way of casting doubt on your fitness to carry to term anyway.

that said, IVF has opened up a huge can of worms because – like in all things – it places human desire over reason and common sense. the logical cutoff for menopause, etc. is that you don’t just need to survive birth – but you need to be healthy and vital enough to raise the kid. in a communal environment it isn’t as much of an issue – but you still create the real risk of your child losing his parents while very young.

in my humble opinion if you want to be an old mom – compromise and get a young surrogate. also make sure you have money and village infrastructure to make sure your kid is provided for.

This is an interesting topic and although the association with your body being able to sustain a child, let alone produce a child is further minimized once you enter 50′s, 60′s, etc, there are cases of women giving birth at a much older age without health complications. I’m more concerned with the lack of connection with a child 60+ years younger. When the mother turns 82, the child is 10. Will she even be alive? Can she remain active with said child?

I would’ve thought that her ovaries would’ve disintegrated into dust by now… who knew? *shrugs*

She’s beyond being a Cougar… she’s a Sabertooth.
