Christopher Coke Surrenders In Jamaica

by admin on 06/23/2010 · 6 comments

Jamaica can go back to normal now, according to CNN:

Police in Jamaica issued a plea for calm after the arrest of alleged drug lord Christopher “Dudus” Coke outside Kingston.  The arrest occurred just outside the capital city on Tuesday afternoon. A failed attempt to arrest Coke last month resulted in four days of gun battles between security forces and his supporters that left 76 people dead, and authorities want to avoid a repeat of the violence.

Coke, who is wanted in the United States on gun and drug trafficking charges, was en route to the U.S. Embassy in Kingston accompanied by the Rev. Al Miller when Jamaican police recognized him at a checkpoint and took him into custody, the minister told a reporter for Radio Jamaica.

He maintained a heroic reputation in the Kingston slums, with some people comparing him to Robin Hood, Jesus and one-time Colombian kingpin Pablo Escobar.

To my knowledge, normal is pretty similar to the numbers listed above, only difference is the media attention surrounding this drug lord. Each morning reading the Wall Street Journal before I head into the office or at home when I return for the last seven years, not once did I ever see a story about Jamaica; yet this man made the front upper fold. People have been dying constantly in Jamaica, before this man’s media coverage and surely after it comes to an end.

We just need to do better collectively in Black communities because this is detrimental to our very existence. It’s a shame we care more about external bias from other racial groups but the biggest division occurs right within our own circle.

As long as he’s alive, Jamaica will not go into a mini war….but if he dies like his Pops did……lights out, parties over, and tourism to JA will be over. I saw the documentary about Escobar last night on ESPN and this is playing out the same way damn near.

man not every fuckin thing is about race. The Wall street journal pays attention when a controversial american arrestation request is made not that weird now is it.
also for a city of 651,880 people (wikipedia) I cant imagine it being normal for 76 people to die every 4 days because of violence alone.

That’s actually a misrepresentation of the journal but ok.

Let’s see now, the violent death toll in Jamaica over a period of 40 years increased by 58.3 per 100,000, As mentioned, it’s not unusual for high death tolls in Jamaica, the only difference is the constant media coverage due to this drug lord.

I included violence in the Black community because, well, the article is about a Jamaican drug lord. If the article involved a suicide attempt within the premise of Warren Buffet and I mentioned Black awareness…your reasoning would be more validated, but for this particular article and for a blog which is opinionated, including the violence in Black communities seems to have merit, no?

So not everything is about race but this deals distinctly with violence committed in Jamaica and its residents
