Salty: Starring Cleveland Cavaliers Owner Dan Gilbert

“[LeBron's response to this letter]“ You in the comments section

The majority owner of LeBron James’ former team the Cleveland Cavaliers is not very happy that his most prized athlete is no longer in the stable, so he’s slamming the door on L.J.’s back:

Dear Cleveland, All Of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers Supporters Wherever You May Be Tonight;

As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier.

This was announced with a several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his “decision” unlike anything ever “witnessed” in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.

Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us.

The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you.

There is so much more to tell you about the events of the recent past and our more than exciting future. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be communicating much of that to you.

You simply don’t deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.

Ouch! “Cowardly betrayal”…..read the rest after the jump. Get your tissue out Cavaliers fans….

You have given so much and deserve so much more.

In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight:

“I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER ‘KING’ WINS ONE”

You can take it to the bank.

If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our “motivation” to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels.

Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there.

Sorry, but that’s simply not how it works.

This shocking act of disloyalty from our home grown “chosen one” sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn. And “who” we would want them to grow-up to become.

But the good news is that this heartless and callous action can only serve as the antidote to the so-called “curse” on Cleveland, Ohio.

The self-declared former “King” will be taking the “curse” with him down south. And until he does “right” by Cleveland and Ohio, James (and the town where he plays) will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma.

Just watch.

Sleep well, Cleveland.

Tomorrow is a new and much brighter day….

I PROMISE you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only:

DELIVERING YOU the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue….

As long as LeBron James is in the NBA…..he’s making ALL the teams money.  But do you agree with Dan???

^^ No class on Lebron’s part right? Who else in the world has a 1 hour special in front of a bunch of excited kids to announce he’s leaving the city?

blyx 07/09/2010 at 11:50 AM

lebron did it for a charity. all the money goes to the boys and girls club. genius to use his brand to bring money and scholarships to underprivileged kids.

in fact that’s the height of class. dan gilbert showed no sense of class and an unentitled sense of ownership over the life of a man – a black man. dan gilbert is clearly and openly on some indentured servitude/slavery shit. therefore he can kindly eat a dick.

Not to mention all the hundreds of millions LBJ made for the Cavs organization over the years!! Good luck with the empty stadium Mr. Gilbert.

its not like he was in cleveland announcement.. he was in conneticut of carmelos wedding & picked a boys & girls club because thats where the money was going… if he picked cleveland everyone wouldve said he dont care about the game he just wants the most money… he excepted a contract for less than hes worth because he wants to go somewhere where he can be legendary..

you guys really think he did it for charity and not to boost his enormous ego? thats pretty naive. PR move is all it is. I’ll admit, Dan Gilbert had no reason to do what he did and made himself look like an a-hole as well. Lebron’s people released the DWade and Bosh move to the Heat the day before so he could have all the glory for his day of “The Decision”. He had to come up with an excuse for an hour long special to announce his decision.

you think he did it for his enormous ego? that’s pretty presumptive of you – and haterish.

the facts are the the hour was sponsored and paid for – the money went to his charity – all of it per his disclosure.

your assertion is an opinion – with no substantiated facts. it’s your FEELING of what the true motive behin the event was.

how…. emotional of you.

DG. 07/09/2010 at 4:51 PM

Dan Gilberts’ move was all PR also.. If he made a less harsh statement there would be not a reason to mention the cavaliers future franchise in the upcoming weeks of Lebron being embraced by Miami/Florida via Nation Wide Television.

No D, Mr. Gilbert is just a disgrace. Yes, it was wrong to make it into an hour special (even though it made alot of money for the B&G Club) – but regardless: he didn’t have to go at LeBron like that. LeBron is just doing what he thinks he needs to do to win. Gilbert should be disappointed but respect his decision. He’s just made himself look like a D#*k.

Dan knows that Lebron was the Cavaliers!! and anybody with any common sense knows that his extremely emotional cry baby bitter rant is all about the money he’s gonna loose and nothing else.

Okay, before “The Decision”, I was letting LeBron have it. Why would he go on national TV and rip Cleveland? Of course he was going back to Cleveland! And since he was going back to Cleveland, I thought he was being a diva for dragging six teams along publicly. I thought he was trying to get one more big media push — ESPN, twitter, new website — cause he would be in a small market for the next three years. Ego run amok.

But…

After watching “The Decision”, and his announcement for heading to Miami, I totally have a different outlook on LeBron — in a good way. His reason for this is flat out winning. No pundit spin, former non-champions (I’m looking at you C-Webb, Reggie Miller, Charles Barkley), and pissed off owners can make me view this any differently. LeBron said it best last night, “I never thought it was possible…” This is unprecedented.

Sure, Jerry West convinced Shaq to join Kobe (and other greats before then too), but never three athletes all in their respective primes joining forces for nothing more than winning. LeBron has put his apirations for becoming a billionaire to shreads with this decision. He will take a big PR hit momentarily, he will take less money, and commit long term all because he believes Miami has the best all around organization — not simply the best three players — to compete at the highest level during his prime.

How many times have we witnessed great players squander their primes by staying with an organization that they know just doesn’t have the DNA of a championship team?

There is no way I’m roasting an athlete for wanting to do the one thing the game is all about at this level…WIN.

Good chess move.

It accomplishes two key things: it ups the ante of the pressure on LeBron by “transplanting” the so-called Cleveland curse onto him — a hometown hero turned overnight pariah; and it empowers the dejected Cleveland fans who want nothing more than to know that LeBron’s departure at least has some silver-lining, and that a new challenge has been made by the Cavs to win before him (good luck) before the whole league, most of whom are already criticizing LeBron for taking the easy way out.

I think he copped out personally. To me it means that he can’t handle the pressure of being the leader and the closer, a la Jordan and Kobe. If he was set on leaving, I would’ve respected him more if he went to Chicago or New York where his talents wouldn’t be so buffered by another player (and title winner: Wade) who possesses the same basic skill set.

he gave the cavs six years to get a team with good enough players for him to win if they did that lebron would still be in Cleveland right now and wouldn’t been the big decision he would remained and already signed an extension he can not hate the man for wanting to win. like bron said he dont want to be 31 with a lot of money and no rings its all about championships. people talking about he lessens who he is by joining wade and bosh, those are the people who do not know basketball history. there has never been a one superstar championship team. there is always two superstars and a regular star everybody who watched last night know the teams bron mentioned but lets go to the lesser teams people may not remember pistons (billups hamilton wallace) heat(wade shaq walker/payton) rockets( olojuwan, horry, smith) i could keep going but i won’t

I agree, if Cleveland would have given him the people then maybe he wouldnt have left. Every year he got close but was always shut down. He needs a ring. Point blank period. So dont be mad, what did you expect, him to waste another six years cause all you wanted was him in Cleveland and not give him good players. I am glad he is going to Miami.

It’s a business…general managers do what they feel is good for them and players do what they feel is good for them. Good luck LeBron!
