Elle Magazine’s Editor In Chief Talks About Their Gabourey Sidibe Cover

by admin on 09/20/2010 · 13 comments

Robbie Myers the Editor In Chief of Elle magazine is responding to the “internet controversy” caused by Gabourey Sidibe’s Fall Fashion issue cover where some say she her skin was lightened.

“It’s not a controversy. What’s so sad about it is that people have not looked at anything else but this. There’s an incredible portfolio inside that Joe [Zee] and Carter [Smith] shot . They havent looked at it. People want to make something out of nothing. It’s sad the legitimate news media picks up on this. It sort of boils down to this. At a photo shoot, in a studio, that is a fashion shoot, that’s glamorous, the lighting is different. The photography is different than a red carpet shot from a paparazzi. We absolutely did not lighten her skin. Retouching is when we take a piece of hair and move it out of her eye, so you can’t compare a picture on a press line from what you do in a studio, where your job is to make them look beautiful. This is their controversy. We’ve seen these things before. I am sad that no one has cracked the magazine and looked at it. We gave her a cover, and she loved it.”

That settles that.  But if they did lighten her…..so what?

White folks get their skin darkened on covers, be it by spray or photoshop. You don’t see noboby crying about that.

Hey let’s be honest… even if they did, they didn’t lighten her the way that it matters… who cared if they lightened her skin, they need to lighten her stomach and fat ass!!! Or she can have another magazine cover when she dies from a massive coronary like Big Pun did!

The over analytical hyper sensitive conspiracy theorists are actually going to make it harder for black entertainers to get work. Opportunities are already very limited, pretty soon no one will want to deal with all the liabilities and politics at all.

So we have to take whatever they give us? We should then start our own magazines if that becomes the case, come on now 0_0

No, we should pick our battles a bit more wisely until we’ve built the trust, reputation, and overall ability to have our own and succeed idependently.

Why do we have to get the white companies to trust us? You don’t see them giving a damn about what we think of them.

In order to build a strong reputable brand, you have to gain the trust of the public. History has already taught us that pulling the race card every 10 min accomplishes very little in the greater scheme of things and only further isolates us.

Honestly, this could’ve been avoided if they left her fat ass off the cover! She is hideous, lacks fashion-sense, and has no reason to be gracing the cover of Elle magazine.
