WOWZERS! It has just been announced that Mark Zuckerberg will make a rather generous donation of $100 Million dollars to the Newark, New Jersey school system. According to the Washington Post:
Booker (Newark Mayor) and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg met at a news conference in July. Less than three months later, the New York Times and Wall Street Journal report that Zuckerberg will be donating $100 million to the Newark school system.
The donation is the first of what will likely be an education foundation set up by the Facebook founder.
The money may be matched by money from private foundations that Booker has been working to raise. The combined $200 million dollars would amount to 20 percent of Newark’s budget of $940 million.
The Newark school system has been in such decline that the state wrested control of it from the Newark government in 1995 and declared the school system a failure. The current New Jersey governor, Chris Christie, will not give control of the school system back to Newark, but will likely appoint Booker to a major role in the rejuvenation of the system.
Great news for Newark, NJ!

Perfect timing, they’re trying to make up for bad press from the movie. After the kickbacks and administrative red tape this donation will amount to nothing. Look at the results they get with a $940 million dollar budget. Providing more funds to currupt/incompetent officials will garner the same results. Its not the money but the curriculum and overall environment that determines success. We’ve accepted sub par standards for too long. The Newark school system needs more than a publicity stunt to turn around the lives of young people.
this smacks of a PR move in lite of the movie… just goes to show you you don’t know what people do to get on top…the educational system seems invested in setting kids of color up for failure…i guess they become the future workers for low paying jobs
right… it’s all about keeping the black man down.
This is BS.
The elitists have as much intrest in that poor people have money and pay taxes as the poor underclass themselves.
How about NYC school? they keep cutting our schools budget and school don’t have shit now.
it makes no sense they fund the military to excess, but keep cutting education around the country…we want to be safe, but equally important is a sound education for all kids…you should not have to send your kids to private school for a good education… the 21st century really demands we have an educated populace, china’s going to leave us in the dust…
PR move or not I could really care less as long as the money is actually delivered and Mayor Booker does the right thing with it, then I’m not complaining. As a NJ resident and counselor in higher education the funding being snatched from the k-12 and higher education sectors is horrific. Employees, departments, and resources as eliminated and terminated and it’s the students who suffer the most. So I applaud them, regardless of their motives, because this state and the city of Newark especially needs all the assistance it can get.
I feel you but what if the money isnt distributed properly? According to the article the federal gov’t aka tax payers deliver $940mil a year. If they cant manage that then 100 mil will disapear too. Sometimes we wish and hope too much and dont look at peoples track records. Why would they change when we just sit around and accept sub standard conditions?
It is good. But it is a PR move. Being the movie come out Friday and does not put him in a good light and c’mon you did not become a Billionaire the night before and that part of Jerseys prison…I mean school system has been failing for a years. Like I said glad that the money was donated but the Human conscience is a funny thing.
