Listen to Alan’s story in the video above, according to the news report:

A man who spent nearly 22 years in prison for a crime he did not commit was awarded $18.5 million by a federal jury.  Alan Newton, 49, was cleared by DNA evidence and released in 2006 from prison, where he was serving time for the rape and assault of a woman at a Bronx convenience store in 1984.

Newton started petitioning New York courts in 1994 to test the evidence for his DNA, but it took about 11 years and four formal filings and requests before authorities were able to find the rape kit, Newton’s attorney, John Schutty, told CNN Thursday.

What a fight…22 years in prison and then four more years waiting to get the settlement.  Is there any way this was worth it?

Yet another example of how corrupt the Judicial System is, in this country. I’m sorry that he lost 22 years of his life, but, I’m also happy for him, that he’s being compensated for his wrongful conviction. He can never bring back the past 2 decades, but, at least now he’ll be able to enjoy the rest of his life in relative peace and comfort.

He should have asked for a million for every year that he was locked away. No matter what he can not get that time back. And then the constant stalling on testing the evidence makes me sick. I believe strongly in the Innocence Project and I am glad that the DA in Dallas County chose to model them and have had a lot of people released based on DNA evidence.
