A new New York Times article looks at Julian Assange founder of the Website WikiLeaks which has done such things as publish emails from Sarah Palin’s personal account, release classified documents from the Guantánamo Bay detention center and release a video showing an American helicopter killing 2 Reuters reporters and 10 others in Baghdad.
Julian Assange moves like a hunted man. In a noisy Ethiopian restaurant in London’s rundown Paddington district, he pitches his voice barely above a whisper to foil the Western intelligence agencies he fears. He demands that his dwindling number of loyalists use expensive encrypted cellphones and swaps his own as other men change shirts. He checks into hotels under false names, dyes his hair, sleeps on sofas and floors, and uses cash instead of credit cards, often borrowed from friends.
In his remarkable journey to notoriety, Mr. Assange, founder of the WikiLeaks whistle-blowers’ Web site, sees the next few weeks as his most hazardous. Now he is making his most brazen disclosure yet: 391,832 secret documents on the Iraqi war. Twelve weeks ago, he posted on his organization’s Web site some 77,000 classified Pentagon documents on the Afghan conflict.
Mr. Assange has come a long way from an unsettled childhood in Australia as a self-acknowledged social misfit who narrowly avoided prison after being convicted on 25 charges of computer hacking in 1995.
The U.S. Government has already demanded Julian return all the documents he has released, which is highly unlikely, or he may face espionage charges. To top that off he’s having trouble finding a place to live, after fleeing to Sweeden to enjoy their press freedoms he was charged with raping two women and may be forced to leave the country.

I never supported the war in Iraq but releasing those documents is extremely irresponsible. He defends it by saying he revealed the truth about the conflict but honestly who is surprised by what is contained in those documents? War is not a pretty thing and many indiscriminate things are done, not just in this war but any war that’s ever been waged. He’s only putting lives in danger and making the mission that much harder for the soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.

CNN, like Fox news is basically a government agency/tool, they never really wanted him to get any more airtime and publicity for Wikileaks message, so they purposely attacked and delved into the controversy with their messenger. A lame and old political tactic. Shame CNN.

These are the kinds of people we need to encourage and applaud. JULIAN ASSANGE I applaud you for your fearlessness! While you monkeys are cheering on your favourite sports team and celebrities people like Julian are getting assaulted for their bravery. When will people wake up and realize that the Government and ‘higher-ups’ don’t have our best interest at heart? They care about money and money and more money. Julian Assange can say whatever he likes about the greater good he thinks he and his website are doing, but the truth is that they might already have on their hands the blood of some young soldier or that of an Afghan family. Those documents revealed the names and addresses of informants, their exact GPS location and methods and sources for gathering intel. He’s practically assisting the Taliban in their war effort. One thing to thin about while you all applaud him

Thank you for telling us the truth when our elected officials, and other leaders of this world, have failed to give their people the real reason of many horrible acts. I am sorry your life has been so hard over the fact that you have risked it to give the world its deserved information. I hope for you to make it past the next few years as more people begin to wake up and regime’s of lies begin to crumble and you will not have to fear for your life. Namaste.

Anyone who is in support for this guy must have no care in the world. This guy literally wants to expose everything. Why doesn’t he show the world the bullshit Iran is doing or N. Korea? UPDATE DEC 4, 2010: The REAL legal charge against Assange is for having UNPROTECTED SEX, because he allegedly failed to properly wear a condom on two separate occasions in which he had admittingly CONSENSUAL sex with Swedish female citizens. I provide some links at the bottom for those very few out there who still bother to check FACTS nowadays.
I’m extremely surprised -then again maybe I shouldn’t be- that the major U.S. media sources are NOT reporting clearly on what the TRUE underlying allegations against Assange are, prefering instead to throw-out the much more damaging “RAPE!” cries against him. What sleezebuckets these people.
By engaging in obvious SMEAR TACTICS such as this against Assange, the American media showed its true colors and ultimately just dealt ITSELF the final death blow, given that it’s LOST whatever miserable shred of credibility, dignity & respect it possessed up to this moment.
As to the question of whether Wikileaks is “good”or “bad”; consider this;
Wikileaks exposes war crimes, murders, corruption, fraud, shady dealings, torture, kidnappings and other CRIMES. If you’re a good person, with good reasoning powers, then you’ll inevitably see Wikileaks as something GOOD.
Now if on the other hand, you’re a murdering, low-down, miserable, war-criminal, torturing, slimeball POS scoundrel, then you’ll inevitably HATE IT.
