Cigarette Smokers Are Going To Love These New Warning Labels…. NOT!

by admin on 11/10/2010 · 4 comments

Here is a look at two of the new graphic warning labels that the FDA is proposing to add to cigarette boxes by June 2011.  They are creating about 36 labels to have the public choose from and vote on before selecting the warning labels that must be used on cigarette boxes and cartons.  According to the Huffington Post:

The FDA is proposing 36 labels for public comment, which include phrases like “smoking can kill you” and “cigarettes cause cancer,” but also feature graphic images to convey the dangers of tobacco use.

The agency will select the final labels in June after reviews of scientific literature, public comments, and results from an 18,000-person study. Cigarette makers will then have 15 months to start using the new labels.

The new warning labels are to take up half of a pack — both front and back — of cigarettes and contain “color graphics depicting the negative health consequences.” Warning labels also must constitute 20 percent of advertisements.

“It acts as a very public billboard because you all of the sudden are reading something about lung cancer from that pack behind the cash register, whereas before you were just reading Marlboro,” said David Hammond, a health behavior researcher at the University of Waterloo in Canada, who is working with the firm designing the labels with for the FDA.

At this point EVERYONE should already know the dangers of smoking and the addiction it causes, which leads me to believe that it doesnt matter what the effects are. People want to smoke…..period.
So all this is a waste.

I mean really,…. WHO DOESNT KNOW THAT CIGARETTS DESTROYS THE BODY…..

I’m amazed that with all that is known these days about the effects of smoking, that the number of smokers in the US isn’t going down rapidly. I found out that the number has been pretty steady (see post on my blog.) As long as the FDA has a budget, we’ll see more and more tactics to get the numbers down.

Even though people know the dangers of smoking by now, the disease of addiction keeps that knowledge suppressed just enough into the subconscious to allow them to continue smoking in spite of. Hopefully, this in your face campaign, will make it harder to subconsciously avoid the reality of what smoking really does to your body. BTW smoking has a deleterious effect on more than just your lungs
