Animal rights association PETA is upset about a game of “donkey basketball” set for Tuesday night at Fridley High School saying the fundraiser encourages abuse of the animals. According to the report:
“What we’re doing is trying to raise funds for the seniors so they have a safe place to celebrate on their graduation night,” said Fridley parent and committee member Jim Felton. “We chose a community-wide event to bring the entire community of Fridley to have fun and support their children.”
But animal rights organizers have been urging local supporters to pressure the Fridley school district to cancel the activity. A PETA press release termed donkey basketball a “rough and abusive activity,” in which the donkeys “are often pulled, shoved, screamed at, or whipped when they don’t want to ‘play.’” PETA further charged that the donkeys are “hauled around in cramped trailers,” and “denied proper space and exercise.”
