WOAH! At the press conference for his new film Madea’s Big Happy Family, Tyler Perry finally addressed comments that director Spike Lee has made in the past about his films. And it goes a little something like this:
“I’m so sick of hearing about damn Spike Lee. Spike can go straight to hell! I am sick of him talking about me. I am sick of him saying, ‘This is a coon, this is a buffoon.’ I am sick of him talking about black people going to see movies. This is what he said: ‘You vote by what you see’ — as if black people don’t know what they want to see.
“I am sick of him. He talked about Whoopi, he talked about Oprah, he talked about me, he talked about Clint Eastwood. Spike needs to shut the hell up!”
Thoughts???

You mad?
They NEED to ask him about Aaron McGruder
LMAO!!! now that’s an interview i want to see!!! LMAO!!! Aaron went IN ON TP!
spike has a right to his opinion but he’s wrong on this one.
whether tyler perry is negatively affecting race issues with his work is a matter of taste and therefore opinions are merely that.
i personally hate tyler perry movies and can’t get through one. but he’s a successful black entrepreneur who is singlehandedly keeping a lot of black hollywood in business with his work. that sounds like progress to me.
i think the reality is that in a post-racial world issues such as “is this cooning or not?” will be irrelevant because we won’t carry serious stigma with the images in question. obviously we’re not there yet but progress would be letting tyler perry do his thing – because he obviously has an audience.
*roll eyes*
Tyler needs to pull up one of his many skirts.
If he wants to drum up business to get tooshes in seats to see his upcoming movie, then do the late night circuit, Good Morning America… something, and just chill. Spike Lee said what he had to say and went about his business TWO YEARS ago. To date, Spike has still made more revenue from his movies than all of TPs movies combined, CREATED and gave opportunities to more non-caucasian superstars and actors that are STILL working two decades later and created jobs for non-caucasians in the movie industry than he could ever hope for. On top of that, he touched on the CORE issues within the African-American community that we bicker and argue about to this day. No offense, I’ve never had or heard a serious discussion about anything TPs done. Okay… I take that back, I had ONE discussion about the roles of fathers and child welfare after “Daddy’s Little Girls” with an MTV rep.
Seriously, just stick to your surface-level stories and stop the griping. You’re making money, you’re telling your story and you’ve convinced a select few that you’re relevant. Kudos. Stop with the phony controversy already.
Word.
Besides being a homo, coon and a religion pimp – he’s a horrible film maker that creates completely vapid movies, derived of all honesty and built solely on cliches.
Anon, if you want to consider that “progression”, you’re missing the point – which is our people’s #1 problem with social issues.
no dickhead – you’re missing the point.
progression is FREEDOM – including the freedom to make vapid movies. the fact that he’s getting it in like this is freedom and black people benefit from it whether you agree or not. there are tons of black actors not to mention below the line talent who work almost exclusively on tyler perry films. mainstream hollywood has abandoned black movies – if you weren’t aware.
being a homo? irrelevant. coon. of course he is. also irrelevant. religious pimp – nearly every black leader is one because black people on a whole inexplicably cling to their slave master’s religion like it’s their own. the point remains that in an ideal american state this man is free to do all of those things – and that there was a time when a black man would have trouble attaining the mainstream using these tactics – that’s progress – it’s freedom.
note I said i don’t like his shit. The point is that a truly a free and liberal society allows him the freedom to make it and the freedom to get his money from it – no matter how coonish or controversially bad it may be.
his success isn’t an indictment of him so much as it’s an indictment of his audience – without ticket sales he’d have no power.
the real problem with spike is that he doesn’t have the balls to ask the real question – is like 25% of the American black moviegoing audience really this regressive? and why? why are black people clinging to religion designed to subjugate and alienate them? why are there no black secular movements especially considering the fact that we’re getting more college grads every year (higher education = lower religion).
spike and bill are doing the thing that old niggas do. idly complain but do nothing to solve the issue. which especially sucks because both of them dudes have the power to do so – and are positioned to get a platform if they did it.
I’m assuming he said he’s tired of hearing it, because interviewers continue to ask it 2 YEARS LATER.
Where are you getting your “more than TP ever has or will” numbers?
Tyler Perry – you’re definitely gettin’ gwap, Godspeed fuh dat!
but you’re in the business of arts and as we know arts is a way foreign subjects get to know about a people, their culture, and way of life.
So, you have a responsibility of presenting Black America to your viewing audience in a rather uncompromisingly flattering manner.
You ride heavy for sistas and I appreciated Daddy’s Little Girls, but you’ve garnered enough essential resources(money, influence, contacts,)to begin exploring serious rolse for the aggrandizement of the Blacks gods.
I know I know I know – yea what i’m I doin’ to contribute to that right?
Tyler’s Madea is CORNY!!!!! Not funny at all. Stop the bullshit
u all should just be quiet let that man do his thing and to hell with spike lee and his crap movies
The bottom line is we pay to be entertained. You can hate on TP movies if you want, but WE pay to be entertained by them. As far as Madea goes, he said he tried to get away from that character, but WE, the ticket purchasers, like the character. What would you do? I’m not trying to take anything away from SL, but just because you feel strongly about something doesn’t mean you should not exercise caution when expressing your thoughts verbally.
I’ts funny how people who more than likely have about as much talent as T.P. has in his finger tip have so much nonsense to comment on. I’m willing to bet 80% of the people that made stupid comments don’t have as much as $100,000 in the bank, Oh my bad!!!! $20,000 get a life. CRABS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
B DAVIS!!!!!! I wish you would copy and paste this comment to EVERY COMMENT SECTION OF EVERY POST ON EVERY BLOG SITE.
CRABS!!! Love it!
FOR ALL OF YOU BROKE A$$ INGRATES, STOP BEING SO JEALOUS!! SPIKE LEE IS 4 FT. TALL AND ALMOST 60 YEARS OLD. HE’S SERVED HIS TIME. TYLER IS YOUNG, A BILLIONAIRE, AND ALMOST 7 FT TALL. I LOVE MADEA, ITS ENTERTAINING, I WILL SEE THE MOVE ON SATURDAY. I LOVE MADEA AND MR. BROWN, SPIKE NEEDS 2 SHUT THE HELL UP!!!
Hopefully all of you that are maligning TP will read our history and realize that ENTERTAINMENT comes in all forms. There was a time when this venue was not available to a black man. TP chooses comedy with underlying “life lessons”. I have seen most of Spike’s movies and frankly after seeing “Girl 6″ several times, I am still confused. Both are doing their thing the way they choose and both have a following. BLACK PEOPLE WAKE UP – STOP HATING and be glad that you too can make movies, good bad or indifferent if you want.
Good 4 TP. I can’t stand any of his dreadful, corny, limp joints, but give him props – he is getting it done and bringing in cash. Spike Lee is a bitter little troll who hasn’t done anything noteworthy in years. His main output these days is whiny rants about the ways things outta be, according to Spike.
As far is revenue goes, whoever said Lee has more than Perry is guess talking total smack, because it just aint true.
I guess many people obviously dont know what ART and CREATIVITY is. These are two different men with two different styles. why didnt Spike Lee ahve anything to say abt all Eddie Murphy’s characters!! i don’t get it. Mr, Perry is good at what he does-humor, entertainment and at the same time getting SOME kind of a message across. AND Spike Lee was good at what he did also-just in a different way! i think our Black community causes much more damage byu alwys be divided ans criticizing one another in the public arena than Tyler’s MADE UP characters! Mr. Lee is an intelligent, man so i believe he should exercise better judgement when expressing hiself and his OPINION abt another. let’s learn to hold each other down and JUDGE positively , not CONDEMN-there’s a difference!!! Lee and all others are entitled to their opinions abt Mr Perry-but there has to be a more positive, propitious way to do that! Respect one another’s creative space! the Black community arent’s idiots and not everyone watching thinks draws a cocnlcuion abt us from Tyler Perry’[s movies for that matter!! Rela Mr. Lee-Perry is not the enemy!
sorry for the error-but read between the lines-Typing fast!!
Love and Peace o akk-Tyler Perry, Eddie Murphy, Martin Lawerence, AND Spike Lee! All very tlented African American MEN doing their thing!! God Bless and keep them all in this business!!!
The Black man is great and the creativity of EACH one is ENDLESS!!!
One person used the term crab in an above comment. I totally agree. Why does TP’s movies have to be coonery bafoonery just because SL don’t like them? SL has every right to freedom of speech but he showed major disrespect by attacking in a public setting. It also showed a major lack of character and integrity. If God has gave you the ability to make movies that will impact, and uplift the black community then continue to do so. Being a crab and trying to bash another successful black director isn’t the way. The black community has a choice. Let us choose SL. If we want to see coonery bafoonery then so be it. Also I don’t quite understand how TP’s movies ill portray the black community. When did the black community stop going to church? When did ghetto girls disappear? Are there not still drug dealers and “niggas bleedin the block” Yes there is definitely more to life, but that world is still very much a reality!
Well, my verdict was still out on TP’s movies, but after this recent one, “Madea’s Big Happy Family” I was in full agreement with Sir Spike. TP took buffoonery to a whole new level. He mocks Christianity and Madea who not a Christian has all the answers to fix everyone’s problem. The image of older Black folks smoking weed and horney is just out of control! Such disrespect of Black men who are portrayed as spineless jellyfish is enough to make you want to kick his **!!@?!! Yes, he employees Black folk but in the immortal words of Robert “Hollywood Shuffle” Townsend, “there’s work at the post office!” Final words: I like to laugh but please don’t do it at our expense.
Oh, and lastly not to mention the perpetuation of Black women being controlling, mean and evil is not what you want to leave in the minds of people, especially white America. Don’t get it twisted, many of them believe this is how we are. That’s why when a white person roles up on you they want to give you a “hi-five” etc. In their minds they think this is how to relate to us. They think this makes us comfortable because they spew out a few colloquialisms and body movements. Go head brother make that money!!!!!
Tyler Perry has TRICKED the public with his sad stories and lies about his rise to fame. He did not write “Diary Of A Mad Black Woman”. You may trick the people, but you can’t fool GOD. Exodus 22: 3 says if a man steals, he should make “FULL RESTITUTION”. “Fantasy Of A Black Woman/1991 and Diay Of A Mad Black Woman/2000. Both have (4) characters with the same names, (76) similiarities. That is not a coincidence. For Mr. Perry to come to Dallas in 1998, to the same theater where the script of “Fantasy Of A Black Woman” was left with the theater manager. Which by the way is a friend of Tyler Perry. Now suddenly he ends up releasing the same production in 2000. Making a claim to be able to write from a woman’s emotions. Money may win a court case, but money can’t change GOD’s judgment.
Also, if you were really molested, why are you finding it a joy to wear dresses repeadly and mock women? you should want to put the past behind you. THE PUBLIC NEED TO OPEN THEIR EYES..
