New Jersey To Eliminate ALL Toll Collectors By 2013?

Say goodbye to human beings, the N.J. Turnpike authority will be eliminating all toll collecting jobs on its Parkway and Turnpike when the workers new contract expires in June of 2013.  According to NJ.com:

Unions agreed to a series of concessions, including salary cuts of about 25 percent — from around $65,000 a year to $49,500 annually — by the end of the contract.  State Transportation Commissioner Jim Simpson said even though 70 percent of drivers use E-ZPass, it costs twice as much to staff the cash lanes.

Turnpike union president Fran Ehret wasn’t so sure the Turnpike could go all-electronic any time soon.  Regardless, she said, the agreement with the authority buys time for toll collectors at a time when the authority was looking to hire a private company to pay them $25,000 a year.
