First Lady Michelle Obama has scheduled a poetry evening for Wednesday, and she’s invited several poets, including a successful Chicago poet and rapper, Lonnie Rashid Lynn, Jr., AKA “Common.” However, Lynn is quite controversial, in part because his poetry includes threats to shoot police and at least one passage calling for the “burn[ing]” of then-President George W. Bush.

It’s a shame that they are only highlighting a few words in the many poems and raps that Common has written. Let’s not forget that poetry is an art form, raw self expression. Common is a strong advocate for peace and love. How unfortunate and sickening that Common, or anyone for that matter, to have their entire character be judged based on insignificant details in comparision to the individual as a whole. Go Mrs. Obama for not even commenting about your descision on inviting him. After all Common is short for Common Sense…I’m sure only the best judgement will be displayed during this event.

The poem was a “what if,” scenario Common doesn’t really have a gun waiting to shoot police. Poetry is not for shallow people and Sarah Palin is puddle deep. Some of you people commenting don’t have the intellectual capacity to defend Common so you shouldn’t try.
