Oh boy….a blogger and evolutionary psychologist from Psychology Today published an article which has now been removed entitled “A Look at the Hard Truths About Human Nature” where he tries to explain why black women are the least attractive. Here’s a snippet that went viral and didn’t make some people too happy:
What accounts for the markedly lower average level of physical attractiveness among black women? Black women are on average much heavier than nonblack women. The mean body-mass index (BMI) at Wave III is 28.5 among black women and 26.1 among nonblack women. (Black and nonblack men do not differ in BMI: 27.0 vs. 26.9) However, this is not the reason black women are less physically attractive than nonblack women. Black women have lower average level of physical attractiveness net of BMI. Nor can the race difference in intelligence (and the positive association between intelligence and physical attractiveness) account for the race difference in physical attractiveness among women. Black women are still less physically attractive than nonblack women net of BMI and intelligence. Net of intelligence, black men are significantly more physically attractive than nonblack men.
The only thing I can think of that might potentially explain the lower average level of physical attractiveness among black women is testosterone. Africans on average have higher levels of testosterone than other races, and testosterone, being an androgen (male hormone), affects the physical attractiveness of men and women differently. Men with higher levels of testosterone have more masculine features and are therefore more physically attractive. In contrast, women with higher levels of testosterone also have more masculine features and are therefore less physically attractive. The race difference in the level of testosterone can therefore potentially explain why black women are less physically attractive than women of other races, while (net of intelligence) black men are more physically attractive than men of other races.

You don’t need to be mature, you need to be intelligent. As a scientist, who is a black female, I was able to listen to AND understand his “findings” and he left little to be desired. What are the demographics of his control group? The background and a history of the people that they have dated and/or usually find attractive? Everything he stated is subjective, just like the study he did on why Black people are less intelligent than [any of the] other races. What people did he study to come to that conclusion? Any one can ask a group of people together and call it a study and make colorful graphs. Lately, it seems whenever a study focuses on Black women, it is something very negative that puts us at the bottom. Do I think that he may be racist, maybe as anyone can be but I do not think that he is fond of Black people, American or African, and I think that he is “obsessed” with finding out “what is wrong with us”.

testosterone levels are responsible for male secondary sexual characteristics. so he’s exactly right that black men produce the most testosterone. this is in part what makes our dicks (PAUSE) bigger.
it sounds like he’s making an envious argument where he’s complaining about his relative lack of testosterone – which is why he’s so fixated on testosterone levels.
after all, high testosterone levels in black women would not increase bmi it would decrease it – as testosterone promotes lean muscle building.
he’s right that black women are the biggest – but IMO that’s cultural – black women in general are eating too much and not exercising enough. That’s a hard truth – but it’s true in general.
that said, there are a ton of black women i see every day who are big and beautiful. jennifer hudson is an example of a woman who went from a proverbial 2 to an 8.5 since dropping weight.
so this guy is obviously projecting – feeling inadequate about his own lack of testosterone. which is why this ridiculous testosterone argument dominates his whole theory.
that said, we’re adults (most of us) so the idea of bmi – and being healthy – amongst black people – is an issue that needs lengthy discussion.

His point about testosterone has never been proven. Testosterone levels in women or men do not change across ethnic groups. Genes, environment, etc determine hormone levels.
The only thing he stated that has factual data is the BMI of Black women vs other women. Just as a personal experience, everytime I go to the doctor or meet with a trainer that isn’t Black, I’m always told that I’m overweight for my height based on my BMI but my body fat percentage is healthy. I’ve always been told that our BMI is higher that other people so we cannot base our health goals on that information alone. Just wanted to share that.

this has been proven anecdotally – using olympic athletes and also in general population studies.
it’s also been proven that bmi distorts perception of african americans. I’ll completely agree with you on that. we have higher BMI BECAUSE WE HOLD MORE MUSCLE. so you take a white male with the exact same dimensions of a black male and the black male will WEIGH MORE. Our muscles are more dense – with more fast twitch muscle. You see, that BMI data proves my point, because more testosterone = more muscle which skews BMI. The blogger couched it in douchbaggie terms but he’s not incorrect – black people tend to have higher testosterone.
Another immediate example of this is amongst elite swimmers. white swimmers have less dense muscle – lower levels of fast twitch (which perform anaerobically) and more slow twitch (which perform aerobically). slow twitch muscle is less dense and more “spongy”. The result of this? WHITE PEOPLE FLOAT BETTER. Floating better means you expend less energy staying afloat which means you swim better/faster.
I have 6% body fat and work out a lot. I had a near death by drowning incident so afterwards i took a swimming class with an ex-olympic swimmer training me. I took my shirt off by the pool and he took one look at me and was like, “You’re gonna sink like a stone.”
on the opposite end of the spectrum – asians tend to have the lowest resting levels of testosterone — a lot of it having to do with their diet. high levels of phytoestrogens/soy in the diet reduce serum levels of testosterone. Other examples of phytoestrogens in the asian diet include things like lemongrass (south asian), tofu (soy), and garlic.
His grasp of the testosterone facts is not wrong. his assertion is though. if black women have more testosterone they would actually be leaner – not thicker – as testosterone levels promote fat burning and fat loss (hence why athletes supplement with it). His ensuing argument is flawed and fueled by his own insecurities.

No race is perfect. True, blacks are less intelligent. But their thicker smaller skulls are great for making athletes like Mike Tyson. And the thinner larger white people’s skulls can incase Einstein kind of brains.
Blacks (men) have higher testosterone levels than whites. So they are faster, stronger, look better, and build muscle slightly faster. But whites have lower levels which means less agressiveness and lower criminality.
Soooooooooooo, black women also have higher testosterone levels than their white counterparts. so they have more solid hairier bodies and smaller hips. If some people (including myself as a black male) call that ugly, it is their right to think that.

Yes, compared to white women they do, blacks have higher testosterone levels and that makes their hips and pelvic bones narrower and shoulders broader. It’s not a well known fact because of the existing stereotypes but it’s true and has been proven.

BMI in blacks, as someone pointed out, tend to be higher because blacks are more muscular, also if the study on which it this was based was made on blacks in the USA, then them being bigger is a result of their diet, not of a natural tendency of blacks being bigger.
Many of the things that he pointed out are true such as higher testosterone levels leading to a more masculine looks, but what he forgot is that people tend to be attracted to their own race/ethnic group. The typical black woman might be unattractive for the avergae asian or white man, but the same works the other way around: black men do not find attractive the typical white or asian woman and there’s nothing wrong about that, it’s just the way we’ve been created.
I perfectly understand why many black people got angry, there are some thing that are undeniable scientific facts but there are others that are a matter of taste just like I’ve pointed above.
