Supermodel Naomi Campbell Is Ready To Sue Over This Chocolate Ad

by admin on 05/31/2011 · 7 comments

Naomi Campbell is not thrilled that this new Cadbury Bliss chocolate ad makes reference to her name when describing the new sweets.  In her statement released to The Independent today she says:

“I am shocked. It’s upsetting to be described as chocolate, not just for me, but for all black women and black people. I do not find any humour in this. It is insulting and hurtful.”

I don’t believe they were referring to her ‘chocolate’ skin tone in the ad, they were referring to her DIVA ways (which she is known for).

I think that the photo absolutely does diminish the validity of her outrage. The use of “chocolate” as a stand-in for black is especially prevalent in sexualized images of women of African descent. There is certainly a legitimate cultural criticism that can be leveled against such an association. But when someone like Naomi Campbell profits from it from one side of her mouth and then rails against it as racist when she isn’t being compensated, I do definitely think the “validity” of the outrage is in question.

I don’t think being referred to as chocolate is offensive – I’d think it was a compliment. Anywho perhaps they shouldn’t have mentioned her name at all. She’s probably just offended b/c she’s referred to as a diva. Sometimes the truth does hurt. But in any case they shouldn’t be able to use her name all willy nilly.
