Florida Governor Signs New Law Requiring Welfare Recipients To Take A Drug Test

by admin on 06/02/2011 · 23 comments

The American Civil Liberties Union has already spoken up about this one, claiming requiring a drug test with no suspicion is a violation of privacy, we want to know what you LIFERS think about this. Reports the Daily News:

Republican Gov. Rick Scott signed a bill on Tuesday that requires benefit recipients to undergo drug testing.

Applicants for the federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program who test positive for illicit substances won’t be eligible for the funds for a year, or until they undergo treatment. Those who fail a second time would be banned from receiving the funds for three years.

“While there are certainly legitimate needs for public assistance, it is unfair for Florida taxpayers to subsidize drug addiction,” Scott said.

To get a job with some companies. You have to take a drug test

I’m assuming this is just for cash – not food stamps. I’m inclined to agree with this but I will need more info.

I don’t have a problem with it. What I do have a problem with is the fact that company that Scott used to own before coming Governor are the one that are going to suppling the drug test kits. Hmmmmm

WHAT EXACTLY THERE TO LIKE ABOUT THIS. RANDOM DRUG TEST DOESNT HAPPEN EVERYDAY BUT THE MONEY WILL BE SPENT TO HAVE SOMEONE SCREENED. THATS UNACCOUNTED AMOUNTS OF MONEY. HE CAN SAY THERE IS GOING TO BE TEST AND NON ACTUALLY DONE. MONEY $10 MILLION WHERE TAKEN AWAY FROM A COLLEGE. SO EDUCATION ISN’T IMPORTANT ANY MORE BUT KNOWING WHO DOES DRUGS IS TOP PRIORITY

It is a seemingly good idea, however families who are applying for TANF must pay for the drug screenings themselves….

And don’t let this fool you, homeboy looks and acts like Voldemort. Florida constituents aren’t the brightest when it comes to choosing their officials.

its about time we monitor these people. why do they get to sit around popping out babies like a pez dispenser to keep the aid coming and dont take care of them. And get housing, food, healthcare, utulities all for free or at a fraction of cost. Of course thanks to all of us hardworking folks. And god forbid the working class hit hard times (like now!) and need assistance. Forget about it. have a job? yes. denied// have a checking/saving acct? yes? how much? $12; sorry your denied; why? you have money in the bank. they suggest trying local food pantrys. well guess what?? All the folks getting welfare are lined up there too. so good luck. They should pass this law in every state and make sure its followed!

I agree that people should be tested before getting social welfare benefits. However, when we take into account that it is going to cost Florida a lot of money to perform those tests I guess this is not going to save any taxpayers money.

I don’t think it’s about saving taxpayer money. In fact, this might cost them more than it “saves”. However, it’s time that some kind of real regulation is placed on the welfare system. I know a lot of completely able-bodied and able-minded ebt users. I live in a northern city with more jobs available than in most places in the US right now, but they don’t want the jobs, they want money. Oftentimes, the money is not going to the right places, judging by the fact that I see a lot of these people in public with their eyes all bulging out of their heads. I know a couple (not married) that collects EBT, disability, uses WIC to feed their 3 children and of course the mother is living in a section 8 apartment. Don’t ask me how she pays to have her nails done every week… is there a state handout for that?
Sure, your dignity is already in the dirt when you go to the state to ask for welfare and to take a drug test to receive the aid you’ve been paying taxes for others to receive all along seems a little messed up, but in places where drug addiction is a major issue, I think this is the only means of making sure the state isn’t paying for the illicit drug abuse of its less fortunate citizens.

why should people be required to drug test for a job,so they can pay taxes and for the people on welfare! America the land of free and home of the Brave sound’s like a bit of communisum
