Is Kanye West Hip Hop’s Closest Thing To Tupac?

by admin on 06/17/2011 · 76 comments

The ladies love him, he’s not scared to speak his mind and although he doesn’t live in a courtroom and rep that Thug Life he does go HAM from time to time. Is there anyone else in hip hop you would compare to the great Tupac Shakur, who would have turned 40-years old yesterday??  Who?

I think he would like to be ‘CLOSE’ to Tupac but I don’t know about the closest to Tupac in theory.

hmm don’t think Kanye’s ever made it clear that he desires to be “close to Tupac”….i think your confusing him with Maybach Music Group

I don’t agree that he’s the closest thing to Pac, but Kanye is the best rebel we have in music. He’s so politically incorrect the first black POTUS shook his hand then called him a jackass. He mic raped Taylor Swift and told the world George W. didn’t care about black people and Bush actually said it was the worst moment of his life. Some of that shit is Pacish, but not Pac. Universities teach classes on Pac as apart of their Philosophical studies programs. Kanye does have a similar duality to his music, but I don’t see them teaching classes on Kanyisms.

Reply

Anonymous 06/17/2011 at 8:55 PM

They already teach classes on Kanyisms. Psychology classes in general all cover the super ego….

Reply

lolitSA 06/19/2011 at 4:51 PM

yes, pac-ish, but not pac.
A little too self involved in the conceited way – not in the paranoid way that Tupac was.
Kanye is so self involved – besides he can’t rap?

Reply

Anonymous 06/17/2011 at 9:04 PM

What a dumbass comparison. Lifefiles, usually a fan, but this post is a joke. There is no comparing Pac to any rapper in the game today.

Tupac was prolific, a lyricist and truly a poet. The passion in Pac’s words and delivery will never be duplicated. Yes, Kanye is a dope entertainer and innovative but they’re two very different rappers. And, though Pac was an artist and a student of Juilliard – he was hard as a motherfucker at the same time. I think that West Coast gang banging really influenced him. Kanye comes off as the type that would get those thangs put on him.

And finally, in Pac’s own words…

I’m movin you stupid bitches, vicious telekenesis
Am I reachin your brain? Nigga how can I explain?
How vicious this Thug motherfucker came
When I die, I wanna be a livin legend, say my name
Affiliated with this motherfuckin game, with no more pain

fuckyocouch 06/18/2011 at 1:09 AM

I can see why you’re anonymous, your incoherent babbling is irking my last nerve. First, while Pac was truly great no one who knows anything about rapping, flow and delivery would say he was great at those attributes, in fact the reason people loved Pac so much was because of his “raw,” deliver and flow. Raw meaning not refined. Kanye is an artist in a few different ways. He’s a poet, a painter and a sketch artist and all around fine artist. Do a little research before you discredit him based on artistry because that’s where he directly compares the the great Tupac. He falls short mainly because of his era, we don’t need the type of militancy we needed in the 90′s, L.A. was the wild west in that decade. Also, Kanye is also not really an actor. But, he’s a better visual artist than any other rapper I can think of. I agree with the statement that there should be no comparison, but to discredit him because he wasn’t “hood,” enough is ignorant. “Put thangs on him,” Pac was shot 10 times or more and he’s not here today because of it. I don’t think that is the part of his legacy we should be praising. He didn’t even do that. When he said “five shots couldn’t kill me,” that was defiance not glorifying thuggery. In closing fuck yo dumb ass couch. Your Pac quote didn’t even relate to what you said.

I like a lot Kanye West.Actually his music. But you must be fair.
KW is a good producer he has a great flow and some of his songs are well written.
But you can’t say he is a rebel or anything who will credit him as a fighter for causes..
He makes G.O.O.D music a truly great artist but that’s all.
Tupac beyond the talent was actually a leader someone with so much culture and respect for people. He had this political awareness that made him apart.
No one can be compared.PEACE.

I do see similarities. 2 educated black men that are viewed as controversial in their time – they both provoke a response. In 2Pacs day so many disapproved of him and filed law suits etc etc. and then so many loved him. With Kanye also, you love him or you hate him, there’s no inbetween.

I’m a big Kanye fan but he’s not like Pac. Pac and Kanye are/were both outspoken but Kanye is more likely to bad about a fashion designer’s collection then call out a whole coast of rappers. 50 is the closet thing to Pac mostly because they both share the same I dont give a fuck attitude.

We cannot fully compare both artist but I can say that they both brought different kind of art in music. They are both very passionate and very voice-full of their opinions both very good in music (kanye specializing in beats but also a great rapper and Tupac amazing lyrics). They are both very ambitious and both found a way to get into music (Tupac as a backup dancer & Kanye as a starting producer).

They both have great albums!!!!

Reply

lolitSA 06/19/2011 at 5:01 PM

Kanye West’s cause is KANYE WEST.
His artistry is mimicry, he has no flow (his beats are dope) and he loves fame for fames sake, wants to bask in it, and resents it all at once.
His songs are about personal, internal, self centered angst about this very fame that he has sought, and nothing about his statements actions or even foundations are about the greater good of humanity! They are just another stage, platform for the brand.
Not saying Tupac’s music had more profundity but Kanye’s music doesn’t even try.
I’ll go back to my first statement – he’s not a rapper – he’s a performer – not a rapper.

I agree that Kanye’s lyrics can be quite self-indulgent but I also think he does refer to goings on in communities also, I don;t think he’s as closed off from the world as he’s made out to be. ‘All Falls Down’ for example, Gorgeous, “Is hip hop just a euphemism for a new religion the soul music for the slaves that the youth is missing”, “in this white mans world, we the one’s chosen.” etc. I just think Kanye has seen the legacies that people like 2Pac has left and is much more aware of the mark he can leave.

what a serious discussion. am I the only one that thinks that without the beats and sound you’d never know who kanye was. I love some of kanye’s songs but I feel like I’m listening to a robot. I’ve never thought anything of the sort with pac.

And kanye being compared to pac. I honestly don’t see the connection.

Reply

Mk 01/27/2012 at 12:27 PM

They are similar but PAC was so much greater. They are similar in the ways that they both went art school and love performing and liked to speak their minds but about different things. But I love both their music. Let’s end it at that…
