New Trend Alert: $15,000 License Plates

by admin on 06/23/2011 · 4 comments

While in some states you can get a personalized vanity plate for your car for just a couple of bucks states like Texas have begun to realize that there’s big money to be made from people who want a specific plate and are looking to raise $25 million over the next five years from the sales. At their first auction this year plates such as ‘Porsche’ ($7,500), ‘America’ ($3,000) and ‘Ferrari’ ($15,000) were snatched up raising almost $140,000 by the end of the night.

The WSJ reports that this stuff is already big business around the world – a businessman in Abu Dhabi bought a license plate with “1″ at an auction for $14.3 million in 2008 and last year in England a retired businessman bought his initials “1 RH” for about $400,000.

Who’s buying?
