New Trend Alert: Trying To Raise A Nerd

by admin on 06/29/2011 · 3 comments

After writing a piece entitled “Why I’m Raising My Son To Be A NerdLZ Granderson received tons of good and bad feedback, here what he’s replying about his parenting habits. He don’t need no stinking world class athlete!  Here’s  snippet of his piece:

You know the kind of dad who registers his son for soccer almost as soon as he takes his first step?  That was me.  You know that dad who yells so much on the sideline that he leaves the game a little hoarse?  Yeah, that was me too.  You know the dad who cheers when his kid brings home an A?  No?  Well me neither … until I became that dad a few years ago.

Good for him! I agree that academics should be just as important, if not more important, than athleticism in our society. We need just as many doctors and scientists as we need professional athletes.

Besides, being smart doesn’t always equate to being socially inept… or at least it doesn’t have to be that way, if we change the social standards and stigmas regarding those stereotypes.

athletics serve as a proxy for violence.

all boys are violent. this is an uncomfortable truth. sports is an effective way to channel that violence constructively. they teach the importance of teambuilding and social hierarchy in a fun environment. sports are a useful analogy for the working world. in addition, children who play sports are healthier in general than those who do not.

playing sports isn’t the same as attempting to raise a professional athlete. sports are a useful tool in raising a child and should not be ignored.

this guy lacks vision.
