Philadelphia To Give Out Tickets For Texting While Walking?

by admin on 07/18/2011 · 9 comments

This should be interesting to enforce, according to the news report out of Philadelphia:

Philadelphia officials next month plan to use more “stick” in a program that takes a carrot-and-stick approach to bad behavior by people in cars, on bicycles, and on foot. The program, dubbed “Give Respect, Get Respect,” was launched at the beginning of May, aimed at reining in bad behavior by motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians in Center City.

Pedestrians who text while they walk without looking ahead will also be targeted. And on the motorist side, officials will be looking for drivers who don’t respect the bike lanes. The citations include $120 fines.

Thoughts?

Next thing you know, you will have to have your cell phone in brown bag and texting only while sitting.

I think it’s a great idea. People have NO respect. They walk in front of cars, run into people while texting and have absolutely no regard for what’s going on around them. People are getting ruder by the day and it’s a shame that these things even have to be enforced. If you can’t see the problem, you’re probably a part of it….

@ Chun – The same can be said for people with dogs, children, or folks having a conversation while walking together. The law is stupid.

In Philadelphia, people walk infront of cars/people regardless of whether or not they are texting.

@ chun so now fines have to be given out for people being “rude”? It’s a matter of respect not an issue of law enforcement.
