One of the few African Americans to play in the NHL, the Philadelphia Flyers’ Wayne Simmonds had a banana thrown in his path on Thursday during a shootout in a preseason game against the Detroit Red Wings in Ontario, Canada. Here’s what Wayne who scored anyway had to say about the incident:
“I caught it from the side of my eye. It was a banana. Hopefully, that wasn’t directed towards me being black. Because if it was, that’s just somebody being ignorant.”

im from philly and didnt even know we had a black hockey player.
shit…serves him right! we dominate all sports. its well known in philly that hockey is for the white boys! lol
only reason we don’t dominate hockey is there aren’t really any rinks in the hood. the first major urban area to get rinks in the hood and programs for low cost skates for kids – it’s gonna be over. we’ll run hockey and we’ll give it swag.
