Who Was Your Favorite Female Rapper?

by admin on 11/24/2011 · 56 comments

The female rap fame before the Nicki Minaj era was plentiful and headed up by Lil’ Kim, Missy Elliott, Lauryn Hill and Foxy Brown as shown from this VIBE magazine cover from the late 90′s.  There was also MC Lyte, Roxanne Shante, Lady Of Rage, Da Brat, Queen Latifah, Queen Pen, Gangsta Boo, Mia X,  Amil, Rah Digga, Eve, Vita, Trina, Remy Ma, Ms. Jade, Charli Baltimore, Jackie-O, and Khia etc.  Did we leave anyone out?

Which one, or two, or three of these female rappers were you addicted too?

Lauryn was infinitely more articulate, original and just damn straight connected to her audience on an emotional level than any other of those other female rappers listed, talented though they no doubt are. Miseducation remains one of the best hip hop albums ever produced for so many reasons – in terms of the creation of an original sound (blending beautiful musicality and hiphop together), in terms of its emotional depth and social consciousness and just total listenability, the solidness of every track and the cohesion of them all as a whole. Miss Hill, please make some damn music again, I miss you

For me, it’s a toss up between Lauryn Hill & Missy Elliott.

Just like Drake: Lauryn Hill was most promising & talented, but everyone wanted a rap album from her but it was R&B.

Lil Kim obviously was the Queen & if BIG was still alive no one would be dissing her.

Missy gets honorable mentions for being so business savvy.

Foxy was never good to me & she self destructed fast with all that corny China Doll shit & then she was Trini & then Jamaican & then IDK

Lil’ Kim will always be the queen! Lauren Hill and Missy where bigger then hip hop to call them the best rapper! Those 2 where in another lane that no one today can even touch!

Eve, Lil’ Kim, and Lauryn Hill!

Eve was raw and real and her flow was so tight. I’m sure she could definitely beat any female rapper in a battle.
Lil’ Kim started the whole sexy female rapper persona which chicks like Foxy, Nicki Minaj, and Trina followed and she still kept it raw, fun and sexy.
Lauryn Hill was giving us the straight, knowledgeable, empowering type of lyrics. She had that “old soul” type of flavor.

I wish all of these chicks would come back show the current female “rappers” how it’s done.

:-)

Lil Kim will always have the title, she changed the game. #WOW did yall really leave out Salt n Pepa

Lil Kim, Lauryn Hill, and Missy in that order if we are talking about the greatest Femcee’s of the 1990′s to present day with Foxy, Eve, Dabrat, and Rah Diggah getting honorable mentions. If we are talking about the 1980′s to early 1990′s, Salt N’ Pepa, MC Lyte, and Queen Latifah with Roxanna Shantee, 3-5-7, Choice recieing honorable mentions.

Nikki Minaj would be one of today’s current queens but she is considered pop to me. She went from Street chick that got a little attention to a pop clown like Gaga. Right now their is really no one in the #1 spot because the stuff they play now is not Hip Hop. It’s bull shit! Just saying but check out Lil Kim’s new song ” I am not the one”. That’s Hip Hop, especially for females. And to keep it honest, if Remy dumb ass wasn’t in jail right now, I really think she would be running it. I’m just saying.

im from canada and i truely feel Lady of Rage was the best, just listen to her raw talent on ‘Afropuffs’.

She wasnt used properly, she could have made it BIG!

Chesco, with the exception of Missy (and only because of her crossover appeal), big girls haven’t been successful….

LOL at Anonymous about Nicki. I would love to hear her stripped of all this monster voice and barbie bullshit and rock a mic like I think she can.

I’m going with Lauryn, Kim, MC Lyte, Rah Digga, Jane Doe (from Twice in a Lifetime – Black Star album), Fox has skills, Eve and Salt n Pepa of course. Queen Latifah is a mogul and Missy changed the game. Trina can rock a crowd and Remy is hard too.

I wish we had a variety like this in today’s music :(

Lauryn&Missy….to big for just “RAP” they transcended there talents into so many different generes and industries they are on another level.

Just Rap: Lil Kim….ALL DAY. ==========> Remy Ma. Best female lyricist EVER.

Underrated mentions: Jacki-O cause she got a CRAZY pen game. and……

KHIA……YEA I said it. She has made some real good MUSIC. “NASTI MUSIC” was a GREAT album. and she has so many other great songs that aren’t dirty ghetto anthems. +1 the diss track she has against TRINA& JACKI (SHE KILLED THEM) She could have been big just her mouth keeps her in trouble.
