“It’s No Different Than Discriminating Against Blacks…” Jay-Z On Gay Marriage

by admin on 05/14/2012 · 69 comments

While he was making his big music tour announcement in Philadelphia earlier today CNN ran into hip hop mogul Jay-Z and got his thoughts about Barack Obama’s recent support of gay marriage. Here’s the word straight from Jiggaman:

“I’ve always thought it as something that was still, um, holding the country back. What people do in their own homes is their business and you can choose to love whoever you love. That’s their business. [It] is no different than discriminating against blacks. It’s discrimination plain and simple.”

Thoughts? And who will be the first rapper to attack Jay-Z for his stance?

A, I agree with your point that no significant rapper can attack him on the issue. However, I’m not so sure about your claim that Hova is, ‘speakin some beautiful truth’.

First off, no significant rapper can attack him on the issue because attacks against gays would be detrimental to any entertainment career. And regardless of what his peers may think, Jay definitely has a point that the state has no business in the bedroom of consenting adults. The problem is that his comparison of the gay marriage debate to the plight of black Americans is a fallacy.

For one, being black is not something an individual can hide. Now I am not saying that those in the gay community should have to hide their sexual orientation, but displaying it is often a choice. The history of black Americans includes a time when they were not even seen as people. Aside from the horrors of things like lynching, there were also concerted efforts by the government and law enforcement to undermine the socio-economic status dating back many years.

Besides, marriage is a religious institution anyway. Obama had it right back when he proposed civil unions.

Although Jay may be sincere in his support for gay marriages or partnerships, this interview seems to be more of a carefully constructed, and worded, PR move orchestrated by his political allies. Pundits often criticize black voters for being uninformed about the facts and siding with Obama because of his skin color. Jay is being used by his liberal media friends, calling in their favors, who want him to use his influence to persuade black voters. BUT JAY, listen, appeals to emotion make for weak arguments and bad politics. Don’t manipulate your peoples!!!

Okay, let the “Bush mess” shit go. Most people who say that are ignorant and black and just hear others saying it. You don’t know of a “mess”. Support who you want, dislike who you want, but please, for the love of God, encourage your fellow blacks to hop off the bandwagons. Research yourself, legit.

Bush also left two wars (at a cost of at least a TRILLION dollars), a recession, a destabilized banking system, and great international dislike by the rest of our allies and potential allies throughout the world.

I understand your point but I think what he’s ultimately saying is the actual process of discriminating against others in regards of having legal marriage rightsis wrong. We’re all aware of Jay-Z’s lyrics and disses to other rappers but none were actually directed to the gay community stating they should not have the right to legally marry. That’s a totally different subject in itself.

actually hov, it’s very different than discrimination over race/skin color.

gays can hide being gay and move in broad day. they don’t want to hide anymore – and that’s fine. my point is that their discrimination requires certain externally exhibited behavior on their part.

black folk can’t hide being black. at the height of race discrimination there was nothing you could do to escape the wrath. in some places in this country there’s still nothing you can’t do.

and finally, as many prominent gay activists have recently said, being gay is a choice. being black is not.

i still agree with obama – discrimination over what people do with each other that isn’t hurting anyone is just foolish and ridiculous and against the constitution.

Take it from me who is a black man and gay, being gay is NOT a choice. And I don’t know where you got your source from as far as theses “Gay Activists,” but I haven’t heard anyone say that “being gay is a choice.” We don’t chose to be born into which family we are born into, we cannot choose whether we are white or black, same goes for sexual orientation. You are who you are and you like who you like. There are some who are switching over for the thrill of it, but ask any true homosexual person and I guarantee they’ve always had feelings of being gay- maybe they neglected it at first, but they’ve always known.

Reply

Hmm 05/15/2012 at 3:09 AM

Once again, “woe is me” black person. Few, if even that, gay “activists” said being gay was a choice. For majority, it’s not a choice. Do you think someone would choose a lifestyle that has constant ridicule? Constant bashing? “Coming out”? Dealing with society as a whole? You’re joking right? The only “gays” that CHOOSE the lifestyle, are those that are sick of being mistreated by the opposite sex, so they go for something new. Most of us, or them, and naturally attracted to what we’re, or they’re, attracted to, and cannot help, hide, or fix those natural feelings. At least not for long, anyway. Please educate yourself… before you come off trying to sound intelligent with strictly opinions, rather than facts. I’m sure you don’t know one gay person… at least one that’s not “out”.

Cynthia Nixon on gay being a choice:

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2012/01/cynthia-nixon-gay-by-choice/

and on me not knowing any gay people, I work in the music industry and know about “gay” industry friends “choosing” to switch genders all the time – the genders they’re sexualizing at the moment. Most of my industry colleagues are gay/bisexual. I played college football and there are a lot of dudes on the low in football.

and if you’re gay, does that mean you never experimented with the opposite sex? if you did, you made a fucking CHOICE. I can’t choose to experiment being white or asian.

and it’s not about woe is me, although it’s interesting you’d choose to characterize it that way. it’s simple fact: if a war went down right now and everybody wanted to kill all gays and all black people – black people would be fucking dead. we can’t hide. that’s simple fact. you deny that and it’s because you’re a fucking idiot.

sexual orientation isn’t all consuming. it’s not a “lifestyle”. it’s just who you fuck. being black is all consuming and everything you do is characterized by that simple fact. this is also fact. they are not the same – not even close.

Johnny is correct. Discrimination has happened to both gay and Black people but no one has ever told a gay person he/she couldn’t read, vote, etc. of course I’m to young to have experienced all of what Black people have gone through since they were brought to this country but there is no comparison no matter what it’s like living as a gay person in this society.

With that being said, everyone deserves the rights that the constitution grants them and eventually gay people will have the right to marry. This can only go for so long…

The plight of blacks is far GREATER than gay rights has or will ever be. However, the discrimination itself is no different. Sure SOME gays can hide their sexuality but who wants to live in hiding? For those who choose to, that’s their choice. But being required to, is a violation of civil rights.

Will ever be? The plight of gays in this country isn’t over just because a president said he thinks it’s wrong to keep gays from getting married.

It still can’t be compared to the hundreds and hundreds of years of society’s dehumanizing of blacks. And furthermore, there are some parts of this country, like NYC, where being gay is almost more socially accepted than being black. I can even go a step further and point out how some animals and households pets get more respect than some blacks so don’t act as if the plight of blacks is over either. I’m all for equality across the board, but let’s keep things in perspective here and not get carried away with the comparisons because it’s insulting and inaccurate.

Reply

See it for what it is 05/15/2012 at 1:08 AM

There have been gay people for hundreds and thousands of years as well. Just because it’s not wildly documented in American History texts books doesn’t give it any less impact. And this issue could also be compared to the discrimination women went through for centuries. I think many black people take it offensively because from my observation, in the black community it’s still taboo. Many black people don’t like gay people especially other gay black people specifically males because of the stereotype of being flamboyantly gay.
Also, NYC is a melting pot of many different cultures and whether you’re black, gay, or whatever it’s pretty much socially accepted. I know this because I live in NYC. However, make your way to the South past the Mason Dixon line and you’ll see that many times black people and gay people get treated poorly. Especially if you happen to be combination of the two.
As a black and gay person myself trust me I understand that blacks still have a hard time in society. But lets be honest with ourselves, racism will never go away and we can argue all day about how much of a struggle we’ve gone through. We should ALWAYS remember, but we should push for change rather than complaining about what happened in the past. Gay people on the other hand are trying to push for change. Whenever you have kids and young adults killing themselves because they are gay THAT is a problem. I haven’t heard about someone killing themselves because they are black. That is why this has become such an issue. I’m not saying that gay marriage should be passed because of that, but in the BIG scheme of things it pushes for change. Gay people don’t want to be recognized for anything special we just want equality! Plain & simple!

The purpose of the comment was to opens everyone’s eyes that all forms of discrimination is wrong despite gay, black, Jewish etc. Stop arguing the minor details and look at the big picture. Again this not a competion, any form of discrimination is wrong despite how long it has been carrying in for

Hov made the equivocation. In my opinion it’s incorrect.

That doesn’t mean that the fight for equality for GBLT communities is not warranted or necessary; it just means that they are not the same.

No one is saying that Barack or Hov are wrong for advocating. they are right and should continue to do so. but to compare GBLT plight to the race plight is inaccurate and dare I say it insulting to people of African descent. It’s nowhere near the same.

Whether it is discrimination against gender, race, sexual preference or individuals with disabilities…it’s all unacceptable. The sad part is that it will always be discrimination, with race being at the forefront because some people raise their kids to discriminate against certain groups, and some people, are just plain ignorant!

Everyone has their own opinions. What he claims to believe in publicly may not be what he honestly feels. Politicians, artists etc. attempt to show support for those that support them. Does that mean they honestly feel this way? They may or may not.

I can’t say what Jay is really feeling but I find it funny he takes a stand on gay marriage but nothing else. How many times has he said “homo” or another derogatory word in his songs? Did he just start feeling this way after his last album or did he just get questioned and he knew his true response would create a negative backlash?

Lastly regardless if he was comparing or just stating two obstacles but you can’t say you support gay marriage as a black straight man while saying the word nigga etc. He calls females bitches, black people niggas and gay people faggots…But since he’s publicly said in a well constructed political response he supports gays, let’s forget all that!

Being gay is a choice that homosexuals will have to answer for. We’re living in a time when abominations are being marketed and promoted as accepted behavior. The Most High will allow unrighteousness to spread for a season, then comes the Judgement. The scriptures are clear and you can choose to ignore them but we’ll all be judged for how we lived our lives. The Scriptures let you know that homosexuality is sin so if thats your lifestyle your gauranteed to be disappointed in the end. It’s not worth it and your soul is at stake so if you wanna roll the dice then go ahead. I’m not here to argue but Obama and Jay-Z’s opinion wont hold any weight on Judgement Day. Every knee shall bow and every tongue confess….

Is it an abomination to be born with with birth defects or Autism? Those are not mistakes by GOD! There are things that man will never understand. But we protect the rights of those BORN with things that regular citizens call defects. GOD doesn’t make defective human beings!!!!

NO ONE FUCKING CARES. It is a SEXUAL choice! That means whoever you fuck is your business. No need to broadcast anything. Why do we feel the need as humans to feel accepted by our peers. The are many other CHOICES people make that the so-called masses do not like or accept. WHO CARES! Life goes on. Just like no one cares who you FUCK!

It would be great if it was just about who you F*CK but its a lot more complicated than that. Its about human rights. When a gay couple has kids its not just about F*CKING anymore. Its about making sure they have the same rights to protect their children as heterosexuals do. When gay people are on the job its no longer about F*CKING anymore. Its about making sure they have the same rights to insurance for their families and that they are protected by the law to remain employed. See its not really about F*CKING.

Reply

Anonymous 05/15/2012 at 2:36 PM

well if you want to get technical..

-a gay couple is protected by any laws that a hetrosexual adoptive couple would have

-no employer is allowed to ask your sexual preferences, the same way they are not allowed to ask about your religious affliation

- legally, gay couples would be protected under civil union laws

marriage is a traditional religious instituion, ordained by some religoius figure (preist, rabbi) which is then subsequently recognized by the state as a union between persons. the term, ‘gay marriage’, has more to do with the societal acceptance of homosexuals marrying each other.

ALSO, Heterosexuals that aren’t married and dont have primary custody have to fight for those same rights regarding the children (depending on what state you live in)….
There are already laws to protect discrimination we dont need specific laws for “GAYS”.

It’s not that black people HATE Gays, it’s just that Blacks detest ANY comparison of Gay injustice to Black injustice.

They are NOT the same.

Whites used good Bible scriptures to change their intended meaning, and anything else to profit off of black slavery. An example of this is the story of Noah who had a major rift with his son Ham. Noah cursed Ham who represented the black race.

Noah was a man in the Bible given a task by God like many other ordinary men in the Bible. He was on earth before Abraham, before Moses and even before the LAW. The Law was given because God knew man was corrupt and made a temporary means for man to cover his sins until Jesus came to WASH ALL sin away.

White Christians know this, but still use this racial ploy to deceive many in their congregations. They use this passage to this day to justify racisim and seperate blacks from white relationships.

In the past, whites even devalued blacks by placing them in the same class as animals for THEIR PROFIT.

Black and white REAL Christians do not, and can not accept the Gay life style. It would be like asking a Christian to accept pedophilia, adultery, beastiality, murder, having sex with anyone that is not your husband or wife and a host of other sins. SIN IS SIN TO GOD! REAL Christians understand this fact. OBAMA understands this fact too!

No one can legislate morality. No one should be discriminated against for wanting to go to hell. A persons open MORAL indiscretions, are no more stinky than closed ones to God and His children.

Everyone makes mistakes. Even Christians who make a lot of mistakes. Thank God for Jesus who washes away ALL repentant sin. LWG©copyright2012

Ultimately it is a choice as an adult your old enough to know and seek the truth but when your comfortable in your sins you try and justify it by all means trust me I know, God didn’t make you that way maybe your environments were a little sick and we refuse to acknowledge that.

I am gay, white and male. I did not choose to be gay any more than I chose to be white or male. Until I came out, I spent life hating myself for being gay. The only reason I hated myself was because the world hated me. That same hatred is being expressed by many of the above responses.

If you are African American, you grew up facing many instances where you were judged before anyone even got to know you. Thank God we as a country chose to legally eliminate discrimination back in the 50’s/60’s). That legal action has slowly but surely changed things for the better. Things are obviously not perfect, but the laws protected a population that needed protection and they helped change the discussion. I see a huge decrease in racial discrimination compared to when I was a child, and I hope that kids growing up today will basically be color blind.

If you truly think racism against African Americans is terrible, but discrimination against gays is ok, you need to take a long hard look in the mirror and ask yourself why you hate gay people so much.

Any black person that condones discrimination against homosexuals is perpetuating a version of the discriminatory hatred that has been directed at them for years.

Discrimination against any group is wrong, and not a principal our country was founded on. Hopefully one day we can all see how similar we are and move forward by including basic human rights for all humans.

PS It is absolutely un-true that a gay person can be cured of their gayness. For all the straight people reading, imagine yourself having gay sex with someone you know. That repulsion you just felt is exactly what a gay person feels when imagining straight sex. There is no changing you to make you want gay sex- is there? People that have “changed” from gay to straight are either bisexual or are lying.

Racial judgement has nothing to do with righteous judgement….being black isn’t a sin but homosexuality is….so the reference between race and sexual sin is irrelevant….seek God
