Looks like the feud between Spike Lee and Quentin Tarantino will continue after Spike has revealed in a recent interview with Vibe that he thinks Tarantino’s “Django Unchained‘s” depictions are disrespectful. When asked about the film the acclaimed director had this to say, despite Jaime Foxx saying a while back he wouldn’t say anything bad about the film, “I can’t speak on it ’cause I’m not gonna see it, the only thing I can say is it’s disrespectful to my ancestors, to see that film.”
Who’s seen the movie – any truth to Spike Lee’s claims?

Spike should elaborate on why/how it is disrespectful to his ancestors. Especially since he has not and will not watch the film. Once he does that, I can tell you if there is any truth to his claims. Until then… Great film!
It’s not like the movie was made in a disrespectful way, it was accurate to the times of slavery. I think it was properly done. Quentin was smart enough and bold enough to do a movie about slavery without preaching and white guilt, but made it a love story. genius. Sometimes Spike comes off bitter that he didn’t think about the idea or he just hates Quentin movies for some reason. He complained about Jackie brown. I love spike, but come on!
I will wait until the bootleg hits the Internet :\
Anyways, Spike Lee is always sounding like a hater when a movie with black folks comes out. Spike show the world how it is supposed to be done these days by making your own movie come out.
Is there anything Spike Lee don’t like?
Maybe Cheef Keef?
LMAO
Spike did the ultimate contradiction in one sentence – “I can’t speak on it because i’m not gonna see it……but I CAN say that it’s disrespectful.”
No…you can’t say anything because you haven’t seen it & because everybody else disagrees anyway.
Spike got a problem with anybody that does Black cinema besides him…and i hate Tyler Perry too btw. Kill the ego, Spike…everybody knows who you are.
Shush up Spike, there is disrespect in some of your movies also. Seems your art just isn’t better than his art.
movie was off the chain (pun intended) spike mad because he fizzed out after he got game and QT still droppin classics. This is like Ice T being salty towards hov for still be relevant.
It is disrespectful
no its not spike lee is just being hater
Shut up Spike, your movies are boring and stupid. I can think of a whole hell of a lot more films that are disrespectful to blacks before this one. What about certain songs that disrespect black women?? Dont see him saying anything about them!!!
Spike Lee is garbage in every capacity, he’s mad because he didn’t make the movie
I saw the movie and thought it was awesome. It’s satire not a documentary.
Django Unchained bucks the tradition that movies about slavery have to be these serious history lessons. I love Roots it’s flat out the best mini series ever made and probably the best portrail of slavery ever put on film/tv but the one thing it isn’t is fun, Roots isn’t the type of thing you watch to have a good time. What Tarantino is trying to do is tell a slave story that you might actually what for pure enjoyment, it’s black wish fulfillment in the same way and Kill Bill & Death Proof were female wish fulfillment and Inglourious Basterds was jewish wish fulfillment.
Well fucking said.
If you posted a twitter link, I would have followed you off this.
if you posted a blog link, I would have bookmarked it and hit it on the regular just on GP.
if we were in a bar I would have bought you a drink and introduced you to some bitches. Not my best bitches… like the “C” team. *shrugs*
What if he was at a urinal? What would u do then?
ooooohhhh. you like thinking about men at urinals. guess what that makes you?
Well-put, dude.
I was nervous as to how Tarantino would handle the topic but I was surprised. It was a pretty good movie. Samuel Jackson and DiCaprio were pure evil. Waltz was excellent and so was Foxx. No rape scenes major plus.
why is this movie based on slavery all of a sudden entertainment?? cant you see we are being desensitized to our past a pan africans?? will children who see this movie and know nothing of their past see slavery as something can be easily overcome by the love for a woman?? would that BS have actually happened in those days?? im on spike side jamie foxx a coon for this shit and sam jackson too .. muthafucka
because of a movie we’re now being desensitized?
perhaps you’re just too sensitive?
im sensitive to the fact that children cannot differentiate between reality and fiction as readily as an adult, and some adults for that matter .. and how do you think the process of being desensitized occurs? through its inclusion into what we intake everyday .. perfect example: the use of the word nigga .. used to be taboo, white kids wouldnt be caught dead saying it around black kids but now that hiphop has surpassed rock and roll its everywhere .. white kids accepting black music/culture and now its commonplace to hear white kids says it .. desensitization
what children would even be seeing this? what are you talking about?
Exactly….it’s not a children’s movie or directed at that audience you moron
This film was on point, identified parts of our history I’m sure many blacks were not aware of and also made mainstream America aware of the harsh realities of slavery. How can Spike Lee criticize something he hasn’t seen? Spike Lee is not the only black film director and I don’t think Black America needs his approval or golden stamp as to whether this is a good film or not. If he would stop making the same movies about a few blocks in NYC and branch out to project the other black stories across this country then maybe he wouldn’t come off as a “Hater” on this film. I’ve lost respect for him on this…he is outdated and played out as far as I’m concerned. And I’m a real Spike Lee fan….SMH.
Agreed on ALL accounts.
Spike’s that dude. Legendary filmmaker but he fell off hard. He’s more known for bitching about other directors and sitting courtside at the Knicks these days than anything else. Tarantino is a visionary. In his previous film he killed the shit out of Hitler and his Nazi’s like history should’ve done. This time, he’s shitting on overseers and slave owners and the uncle tom’s who turned their backs on their own people.
At the end of the day, it’s a movie. It’s entertainment. It’s a free for all. There are movies about all kinds of disrespectful shit and you have the god given right to deny yourself the opportunity to watch or to indulge in the film.
For one thing, Tarantino is not new to putting the N word in his movies. He even says it himself in Pulp Fiction. I barely felt the presence of the word in Django but I might be desensitized from listening to hip hop all my life. Either way, this movie takes the same route as Inglorious Basterds with the ultimate revenge on evil people. If I have to suffer just a little by witnessing the horrible things that went on during that time while educating myself at the same time then so be it.
There are movies about rapes, murders, molestations, and racism definitely ain’t something new in film. Django was another amazing movie by Quentin that makes you think, laugh, cry, feel anger, feel pain, and feel great at the same time. Somebody tell Spike to shut up and get back behind the camera.
I loved the movie and I’m black … Dope acting, dope fashion… Spike Lee always screaming about how he don’t approve of something or how something is disrespectful. Didn’t he have a similar issue with Tyler Perry… Sounds like someone is just throwing unnecessary shade.
im jus saying…I aint never seen a slave with a shape up
you’ve seen slaves?
you don’t know what they had.
they coulda had a nigga who was nice with the straight blade who was lining niggas up.
