Too Soon?: Starring Lil Wayne

A woman named Airickca Gordon Taylor who is a spokesperson for Emmett Till’s family is not very happy with rapper Lil Wayne after his rhyme on his new song Karate Chop that he would pop a pill beat that p*ssy like Emmett Till who died in 1955. If you’re not familiar with Emmett Till he was a 15-year old boy who was badly beaten and got his eye poked out for whistling at a white woman but despite his injuries his mother decided to have an open casket funeral so the nation could see his face.  Says Airickca:

I just couldn’t understand how he could compare the gateway to life to the brutality and punishment of death.”

Lil Wayne always pushes the envelope, but did he finally go too far?

it was a dope line.

but it did cross a line. but also wayne might have said it in the exact context… i.e. he might be communicating something.

Till was beaten and killed because he was hated. perhaps wayne is saying the same thing about pussy?

Are You F$%$# kidding?? You idiot. There is absolutely NO Justification what so ever in this coon shit! Really right now? Till was hated because he was AFRICAN AMERICAN!!

you’re missing my point idiot. because you’re too emotional.

you’re letting little wayne rile you up like this and have the nerve to call someone else idiot?

the definition of irony.

and please point to the lace where I JUSTIFIED anything. don’t worry. i’ll wait.

You’re wait is over. Please let me clarify 2 things;
1. By you saying, and I quote,”it was a dope line.” was ALL YOU NEEDED TO SAY! ANY “line” , verse, bar or what ever that refers to such a horrible act at a VERY horrible time for African Americans in this country is foul. Out of line. Ignorant. and a blatant disrespect to the Til family and to ALL YOUNG black men in the country! Problem is… you don’t see it bruh…
2. Wayne did not “rile” me home boy, please don’t get it twisted. Young brothers like you that do NOT think before they speak “rile” me up. it’s 2013… we are still behind!!!!

Anonymous 02/13/2013 at 5:56 PM

-I disagree. there is no out of bounds for artistic expression. you don’t like it? it’s just not for you.

-I never said it wasn’t a foul line. to me it was still dope. something can have two attributes in 2013. it can be dope AND foul. televisions aren’t black and white anymore.

-I don’t see it as disrespect to Till’s family. In fact I see it like he just introduced a whole generation of black people who know nothing of Till – and the controversy is only going to spur greater conversation. that’s called the law of unintended consequences. it was invented after your time.

still behind? maybe you are. it’s 2013 and my people are doing fine. i’m proud of my black people and I love my black people and we’re only getting better. my president is black. my glass is all the way full nigga. you couldn’t fade me in a barbershop.

Anonymous, u aint gotta dumb down any shit man, i caught what u were saying off the bat…. Till was murdered cause he was hated, lil wayne will beat the pussy up like Till…. simply means dude hates pussy lol… implying that wayne is gay lol….. Peanut Butter n Jelly seem to have a lil education but don’t have street understanding or can’t read between the lines…. hahaha

you aint right at all.. i think you totally mis understand what the video is about and Wayne’s comparison to Till. The comparison or pussy/sexual act to a hate crime is confusing to me .
dude is basically bordering on domestic violence if you really understand that line, there is nothing sexual about that… and if you say this is about hating pussy(shakes head) it just makes the whole thing worse and justifies and confirms the violence angle.
“Till was beaten and killed because he was hated. perhaps wayne is saying the same thing about pussy?” are you trying to say Wayne is referring to his love of dick by saying he beats pussy?

Anonymous 02/13/2013 at 5:16 PM

my only point is this: what if he meant the metaphor at face value – like what you said in your last sentence?

it doesn’t really work any other way – as you alluded to. so it can be laziness in terms of the metaphor – or he meant it like he said it… which is interesting from an artistic standpoint.

a dope line? ew you sound like the ignorant coon you work everyday not to be. how disgustingly trashy

Reply

Anonymous 02/13/2013 at 5:15 PM

it is a dope line. it’s provocative. it’s causing conversation and discussion.

nas portrayed himself as jesus Christ in a video and was lambasted. I thought it was dope because media crucifies all its celebrities.

a dope line doesn’t have to have moral virtue. it can be disgusting. an intelligent person understands that.

but then you think me an ignorant coon based off three sentences you clearly didn’t even understand. ironic.

“I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend, to the death, your right to say it.” -François Marie Arouet aka Voltaire

Now that’s a DOPE LINE! Hey homie you don’t have to defend your ability to think out of context, which in my humble opinion is a driving force behind our mental evolution which, also imo, is the true purpose of life…to grow and evolve, or realize things today that you didn’t yesterday. Everyone gets so emotional about things these days without considering the reason for its existence. Food for thought folks…when you are immune to the actions and opinions of others, you fail to be a victim of needless suffering…in short everything is not always about you, even the shit people do to you sometimes. Ever heard of necessary evil? Certain shit is necessary, if for nothing else for purposes of simply learning a life lesson. Hey its the world we live in…suck it up and try not to be a victim. The only way to do that is to arm yourself with knowledge, don’t assume shit, and perfect your ability to think out of context…its really survival of the fittest…you better catch it BOOM! ;-)

Dutchess 02/14/2013 at 3:18 PM

…And most of these commenters are guilty of the very crime they crucify for…so disrespectful in the sense that they won’t allow freedom of expression, to the point of calling someone ignorant for what they express. Who made you guys the authority? If you disagree with the message then state your case, but that doesn’t require being demeaning or spewing insults simply because you disagree. That’s what’s disrespectful…The pot calling the skillet black much?

But we all know he has too many kids for that! I think it was just a punchline/metaphor gone bad, with no real conscious thought. But WE ALL KNOW, that lil wayne is not a conscious rapper. He just says what sounds good. I’ve actually heard a lot worst from him…

Chu The Conqueror 02/13/2013 at 3:24 PM

I agree w/ others above. Wayne crossed a line of disrespect that should not have been crossed. Why one would compare sexual performance to a hate crime of extreme measures of white on Black violence is beyond me. I’m sure he could’ve used plenty of other metaphors in that situation but due to lack of respect for his own Black history he decided to make a joke of it b/c he thought he could get away with it. I’m glad to see some Black people still thinking critically about things of this nature. If we don’t no one else will.

Reply

Anonymous 02/13/2013 at 3:49 PM

Bottom line: he’s creative enough to have come up with a better metaphor–he chose not to. Your little brother/sister knows every line of this song. That’s the scary part.

you’d be a better person if you didn’t feel sorry for people.

this is how old heads fail.

young’uns are ignorant to something, you could have been like, “now that you know about Till, let me put you onto a link or a story or an angle that history has forgotten.” it was an opportunity to teach the nigga – put a little information out there to expand his mind a little.

but you didn’t. you “feel sorry” – a useless waste of an emotion.

then old heads wanna blame the youth but the old heads are useless at being old heads.

maybe next time you’ll teach the dude instead of being a judgmental old douchbag, Cuban.

Damn get over yourself bro. ” Oldheads”.. Blah Blah Blah…you really think kids nowadays care about a sit down and from real oldheads like you or a person like me? Matter of fact the best person to reach out to them is the people like Lil wayne. Cause that’s all they listen to is him, KDot, Drake, A$ap, Chief Keef, Fredo Santana JoeY Bada$$..I’m sure your oldhead know probably 1 name on that list. Instead of dropping a line like that he could have polished it up and did a better one, cause I can imagine if it was my family member he put in a song like that. That shit def would not slide….And next time have 1000 seats on your face, Anastasia fielding has their own name and can speak for his or herself .

Bless your heart if you learn about history through rap music.

unimpressed and really…as stated above, you could have taken a moment to educate this young person further on the matter, instead you choose to ridicule. How is insulting and degrading the youth any better than disrespecting one’s history. If you’re not going to be part of the solution please don’t be part of the problem..ijs. The sad part is that no one before Lil Wayne, that appeals to or have any influence on this particular audience, has made any references to Emmit Till. The question you should ask is… who lets kids listen to lil wayne? Better yet, who is in charge of the curriculum in your kids school? Why isn’t that information discussed there? Why is it that most young people, who were not aware of Emmit Till, are getting their first dose of who he was from Lil Wayne. Where are their parents…they should be the first ones making sure their kids have a true knowledge of their own history; why even place the responsibility on the school for that matter? After all Lil Wayne’s music is not appropriate for youth, and the grown ass people who his music is intended for should definitely be familiar with Emmit Till enough to know better than to take what Lil Wayne said literally or at least not be influenced by it…again it is entertainment/art…what appeals to one may not appeal to another…its called expression which everyone has a right too, be it in poor taste or not . Lil Wayne is an entertainer/artist, not an educator or activist. Lets place the responsibility where it belongs. Back to you two…ever heard of it takes a village to raise a child? Since you are so disgusted with the fact that this apparent child has no knowledge of Emmit Till, other than the reference from Lil Wayne, as stated above, how about you provide a link or additional information instead of spewing insults…your comments were such a waste of virtual space, time, and energy. Shout out to Lil Wayne for even sparking a conversation that will lead to more people knowing who Emmit Till is (google my friend), even though its not in his job description :-/

In the scheme of things his audience really doesn’t care who Emmitt Till is as long as it rhymes with the next line. White kids in the suburbs, the people actually BUYING music today, don’t give a damn about something boring like history.

From a 15 year old’s perspective, I believe that Wayne was at his peak years ago. (Not justifying his word choice) but he does seem to let anything fly out of his mouth for a publicity factor mainly because he is known for his risky, witty, and cunning lyricism that makes the listener think. At this moment, he says the same exact things in his songs by only switching the metaphors. He is running out of ideas and its sad. By this point, Wayne has crossed the line on many levels including disrespecting Emit Till, his family, and women. #TryAgainWeezy

This is Lil’ Wayne so it’s not surprising that he made such a disrespectful. Something as serious as the story of Emitt Till should not be joked about, I read the book written about this story ad it is so horrific and tragic on so many levels. Why he would reference this in that line is beyond me.

You’re the only smart one on here, Kay.. Kudos to you. Half of these people don’t even know who Emmett Till was and why he was killed. Besides the fact that he was “hated”, that was not the only reason. I’m not going to tell it here because maybe this will promote research on this topics behalf so these young ignorant black folk will learn something besides what new phone is hot now and what new kicks are the business. Simple people stay on simple sh*t.

Half of our OWN PEOPLE do not even know who invented: peanut butter, the Gas Mask, the traffic light, the fridge, etc, etc, etc……but ask ‘em who Trinidad James is. They know! Dumb a** n*ggas. Sadly, my little cousins have talked about these types of artists and inside I just wanna cry. Literally. No wonder we’re lost….we dont even know who were are, who we were, and where we’re going. THAT is why we (not me) but the youth, take on these rapper personas….its because this is what society tells you you are, and we just eat it up….easily.

But..I’m done with my rant though. I stopped caring about these young kids and trying to help them. They’re lost. So as long as I keep my family chain on the up and up, teaching and bettering ourselves, then I could care less about ‘em.

Blessings Family… I just tuned in and read your comments and I am compelled to add info from a music industry person..a singer/songwriter..
The record companies are only looking at NUMBERS… plain and simple.. They do not give a damn about content ….If it has a beat that the masses are tuned into then thats what the record company will go with. Now a days it really matters not what rappers are saying as long as they are bring in the NUMBERS… Great songwriting is NOT dead but great songwriting has been shadowed by the RAP GAME… no worries… it will ALL change and as far as the rapper Lil Wayne and his rants…. well just imagine ALL his RAPS not SONGS where the rants (RAPS) will be in the long list of outstanding and long life of a GREAT SONG ! NO WHERE… They will be forgotten just as fast as the rise to stardom and financial wealth came to them… This is Black History Month and ANY demeaning disrespectful slur of words will NOT be tolerated nor will BLACKS remain silent on any issue regarding the struggle to survive as a people..BLACK PEOPLE.. We will get it together and one day we will ALL no how to live among each other… in the meanwhile .. STAND UP… WAKE UP… & Never GIVE UP !

Look at the energy this has stirred up.
Comparing Emmet Till’s situation to having a random sexual encounter is so uncalled for & he coulda chose a better metaphor. If you were made aware of Till because of this song–great, now look for some other means of education besides lil wayne songs, please.
