Gone are the days of the NBA’s boldest names competing in the annual slam dunk contest during All Star Weekend which led to a mostly uneventful night, but Terrence Ross did provide some last minute action and took home the prize. What should the NBA do to make this contest more exciting?

Have selected one on one competitions. I would love to see Kobe and Lebron in a one on one. Game to 7.

It was a good dunk contest. here is the problem.

-in the 80s/90s, the best players were usually also the best athletes – so they were also the best dunkers. so Jordan didn’t have to worry about some rookie pine-rider would outdunk him because if he was that athletic he’d be getting a lot of minutes.

-now the nba is super athletic. EVERYBODY is a freak athlete (the training is better; a lot of NBA players are second generation professional ballers so the genes are there too; the supplements are better). So the risk for a nigga like Lebron getting into the dunk contest is sleeping on a nigga like Terrence Ross and getting bodied. That affects his brand and his money – both things he should not do.

so the smart STARS avoid the dunk contest once they’ve established their brand because they have nothing to gain and everything to lose.

because the fan isn’t emotionally invested in the benchplayer he’s never heard of – he doesn’t really care about the dunks so much – even if the dunk is really good.

the NBA like any other league – is a league where casual fans care about stars. no stars = why should I care?
