While I appreciate the effort of a special on Being black in America, I”m highly disappointed in the content. Over 90% of the special was spent talking about the struggles that African Americans face which are also the struggles of those individuals who are of lower income. The special talked about the issues that face less than half of how the actual African American population lives, while I don’t knock that poverty is an issue in our population since we are double the national rate, American needs to see something else to why not talk about people like myself or my friends who are in graduate school getting PhDs in science, or those individuals who moving up the corporate ladder and following in the foot steps of their college educated parents. There is more than one positive story, if as of 2004 24.4% of the African American population live below the poverty line lets look at the other 75.6% of population. But thanks for the effort.

It would be very nice to see CNN it self show how the “Black family”’s wait year in and year out to see the first prime time African-American(male or female)anchor on any cable news network has not been in vain 50 years after the I Had A dream speech! Or, just see a dark skined African-American giving the news for say 15 minutes as this would do a lot to show that even we are qualified to show the world that just ONE Black person can climb the main stream media ladder?????? What do you think about this for an email on cable news or even making the evening news as a FIRST…..

…and Danielle I said those words directly to you because in getting your education please get at least one class in African-American study. This is the only way that you can begin to learn that being Black in America is an ‘experience’ and can not be taught in any class/media program. This is the old non African centered history that has lead so many of our Blacks to not be able to fully understand how 50 years ago, when I heard those words of Dr. King and saw him speak those words, I know that we have not gained any thing in all of these years…
Barack Obama is more accepted in Europe (just as countless of Blacks before him)than in his country of birth where he has no more freedom of religious choice than I did when there was a White Only sign keeping me out of a certain church! Back then (and before affirmative actiion) the White mother who worked out side of the home was deamed a Bad, unfit mother!!!!! The day that Oprah is convinced that she is not Balck is the day of her down fall as so many Blacks before her!
It may be fifty more years but CNN will have to answer for those demeaning Black in America specials. If you take a class on the Black family from the Black culture point of view then you will be able to understand why I am not only a proud Black female but one who also have two university degrees in African and African-American history has already demanded this of the FCC. Or it may be a FCC under President Barack H. Obama along with Oprah’s cable network that will accomplish this in record time
